Depression or Fibro?

Postby AterDecor » Sun Mar 13, 2016 10:59 am

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this whole thing. I was told by my doctor about 6 months ago I was having a fibro flare, so took that as a diagnosis I suppose. However since then I have moved and started seeing a new doctors who is VERY thorough. Had a double appointment with her and only talked about one of the many points I need to discuss with her. Anyway, my previous doctor apparently hadn't officially diagnosed me and she believes that because of previous depression (last one I stopped taking pills 6 months ago-ish) that it is just down to depression so has taken my off amitriptyline and putting me back on my antidepressants.

Now obviously I'm not a doctor but asides form the tender points, I have a lot of symptoms related to fibro that don't fall under the category of depression. Especially widespread achey-ness, back pain I've had for over 10 years with no apparent reason for it and major sleep problems. Also having had 3 depression flares(?) in my life I kinda know when I am depressed and seek help.

I was hoping to hear from anyone for opinions? If anyone has been diagnosed with depression but was fibro? My mum has fibre and arthritis so I generally know what it is and we are constantly comparing our days and they are rather uncanny at times. TIA!

Hi and welcome to the fibromyalgia forums :welcome:

Ask your GP to refer you to a rheumatologist as they can officially give you a diagnosis. Insist on it if your new GP is reluctant. Let us know how you get on.

It might be and definitely push for the referral to see a rheumatologist!

Do try and get an appt with a different GP if you can. It might be worth asking if there are any other patients registered at the surgery with FM, CFS/ME or other similar conditions, and if there are, ask if there is a particular GP that they tend to see, or if one of the GPs has an interest or experience in dealing with such problems.

Also push for the referral to a Rheumatoloist or other specialist in your area that deals with FM etc.

If your dog doesn't like someone, then you probably shouldn't either
