sore tongue/thrush

Postby sarahb » Mon Jul 26, 2010 9:31 pm

Hi,

I did a search on "thrush" and didn't get many hits, does anyone else suffer with a white coating on their tongue/possible oral thrush? I have had it for nearly 3 years now. Sometimes it is not painful, just unpleasant with a bad taste, when I am ill/run down it is widespread and has a burning sensation.
Have seen the doctor, dentist and dental hospital, who advised that my mouth was healthy and I should just brush it off my tongue, take painkillers when it burns and try to enjoy my life. I would enjoy it more if my tongue wasn't burning and covered in a smelly white coating!

It does not really seem to respond to the thrush medicines so maybe it is not that. I know other people with compromised immunity often get oral thrush.

I get a burning tongue but not the white stuff. From what I can remember with my kids, oral thrush tends to be more spots of white with redness as well so maybe you don't have thrush. People with fibro can get skin that burns so it might just be a fibro symptom in an unfortunate place???

I get a sore tongue, not sure what it is but when eating it feels like i have eaten something very hot and feels like something has scraped the top layer of my tongue away.
I also get ulcers in my mouth.

I did not think about it could be due to thrush, i will have a word with my GP next visit to see what he says.

Hi Sarah. Yes I've got the same as you. Mine started just after the new year and it hurt so much, really painful and burning and a white coating all over with very tiny red spots. I also had like small blisters inside my cheeks. Went to GP's and they gave me some drops for thrush. After 2 weeks it was no better so went back where they put me on these lozenges to suck. It went away for about 3 days then came back as bad as ever. Went back to GP's who said it wasn't thrush and wanted to do some blood tests because anaemia can cause this problem. Had the tests and they came back as normal. So back to GP's who didn't have a clue and said she would refer me to a specialist. That was last March and I'm going to see the specialist 20th September.

It did go away for a while from about May until just recently, its come back again. I did mention to my GP that it's usually worse when all my other symtoms flare up with the possible Fibro but they say it can't be, but I know it is.

Don't know if it will help you Sarah but I find if I use Cordosyl (mouth wash) twice a day (morning and night but not when you brush your teeth cos it won't work then) I find it helps a bit. Worth giving it a go.

At last!
I have had a coating on my tongue since all this started. I have been so embarrased about it
I am extra careful about my oral hygiene because of it. Mouthwashes etc
I would not say that my tongue is sore but it is very sensitive. There again the amount of painkillers I am on  may well disguise the pain. I have no other mouth symptoms so dismissed thrush.

I also use a tongue scraper and without going into the gory details it is absolutely disgusting what comes off.

Coral. I have often thought about Cordosyl as my X Father-in-law was advised to use this by a MacMillan nurse when he had mouth cancer. I think I will give it a go and will take on board your instructions on how to use it.

I also have a strong metallic taste in my mouth quite a lot and wondered if this was my Fentanyl patches that were causing this. I also remember the same nurse telling my Father-in-law that the morphine tended to cause this and my Brother-in-law complained about this taste when he was on morphine for cancer. Could be an opiate thing :dunno:

Hi Quackers I've never used a tongue scraper, will have to give that a go. I'm not on any opiates just zapain painkillers and amitriptyline (which is doing absolutely nothing for the pain). I read somewhere that cordosyl is good so thought I'd give it a go as not getting any answers from GP's. I am going to see a maxillo facialist sept 20th about my tongue so maybe he will have some answers. Trouble is when I mention to my GP that my tongue gets really sore when the pain all over gets really bad they say its impossible for the two to be connected. So I'm not holding my breath on the specialist. My tongue is quite sore today and got a really bad metallic taste in my mouth, specially after I drink coffee. Hope the cordosyl helps you.

I've had oral thrush now for 6 months. No amount of medication can get rid of it. FM doctor told me my immune system is overactive and thats why I keep getting thrush in my mouth. It is horrible - bad taste in my mouth and coated tongue. I'm following a yeast free diet just now to see if that helps.

Hi shp just replied to your other post about lymph glands, if you have oral thrush it will be why you have raised glands as your body is trying to fight it :hugs: :hugs:

Hi Denys,

Thanks for your advice. I had just read your reply to my other post and I started thinking that the oral thrush might be causing the sore glands as my body is trying to fight the candida. My Fibromyalgia started after a virus last year and my doctor told me that my immune system is overactive and hasn't returned to normal yet. He told me that my FM and chronic fatigue is caused by an immune system imbalance so it makes sense an oral thrush infection could affect my lymph glands.

Thanks

SHP

I have been to see a new doctor and he's referred me to a consultant about the thrush. I had already seen a consultant which the dentist referred me to at the dental hospital but my doctor has said now he wants me to be seen again, which is good. To be fair the last consultant said I'd just have to live with it and just get a toothbrush and brush it off! which my doctor said does not seem very satisfactory - I agree! no news as yet on an appointment but I will let you know...

hi
i started with the same symptoms as you about 6 weeks ago, but for about 18 months i'v had a salty taste too.was given antibiotics by a locum gp,but this made it worse when i finished them.while on hols was given some anti fungal medication by a spanish pharmacist but to no avail. went back to gp now waiting to see a maxxi facial(something like that) at the hospital.gp thinks it maybe leukaplakia, which is causes by smoking. it is also a pre cancerous cell which is very worrying. have also read it could have sometning to do with a weak immune system. so hopefully will know more when seen the consultant at the hospital.
if you get any answeres when you go to hospital please post ,it may give me some ideas of what to ask when i go
thanks sharon
