Concerns about the validity of the PACE ME trials.

Postby perseus » Fri Mar 23, 2018 12:53 pm

A new study into the PACE Trials’ original research was published yesterday.

These findings raise serious concerns about the robustness of the claims made about the efficacy of CBT and GET. The modest treatment effects obtained on self-report measures in the PACE trial do not exceed what could be reasonably accounted for by participant reporting biases.

The PACE Trials were a study into treatment for people living with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, commonly referred to as ME/CFS. The research has also been applied to people living with fibromyalgia and Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS), among other illnesses. The PACE Trials claim that people living with ME/CFS can improve their illnesses, and sometimes recover, by having cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and by using graded exercise therapy (GET).

More concerning the political background is contained here, which is why I've posted in this section.

An MP, Carol Monaghan said on the 20 February 2018

I think that when the full details of the trial become known, it will be considered one of the biggest medical scandals of the 21st century
