Hi All

Still waiting on the DWP and my application for DLA. They have now had a report from my Dr and Consultant and I've just received a letter today saying that someone will contact me regarding a medical from Atos.

Just wondered if anyone could give me any advice on what to expect, feel a bit nervous - don't know why as I'm not lying but it makes you feel a bit under the spotlight doesn't it !!

Don't know why I'm worried as it seems like most of you get turned down first time around so not really expecting much.

Any views? :-?

I had a Atos medical for my DLA a si put mine up for appeal.

I was expecting trouble but to be honest the Dr who came and did mine was ok, she just sat and asked me questions, did a bit of a examination, just seeing what movement i had in my arms and legs and thats it really.

I reasted from DLA ppl a copy of her report and it wasn't too bad, it got the right result so can't complain.

Just be honest with them, but don't try and do some thing you can't, i refused to do some thing for mine as i knew i would end up falling.

From getting my letter from DLA, it took about 2 weeks to get appointment with Atos, once done it was about 4 weeks before DLA made contact back to me.

I had my DLA medical a while back now but it was very straightforward indeed. I had to attend at the designated centre and see the doctor who on this occasion was very pleasant and easy to talk to. He asked me about my FM from its diagnosis through to present date and what meds I was taking and whether I had had referrals to specialists etc. He then briefly asked me about any day to day difficulties I might be experiencing and I had prepared a written list so I didn't fumble over my words at this point. He asked me whether I had any relatives etc who acted as carers. He then briefly examined me (very cursory really) and it was all over - in all took about 15 minutes! Obviously this was my experience and others may differ but I found it quite straightforward and there were no "trick" questions! Good luck.

My medical went OK, but I would advise you to be honest and not try to have any pride and tell them you can do more than you can.

Be aware, that you are watched and observed from the moment you enter the waiting room. They will observe who accompanies you, whether you managed to get off the chair OK, how well you walked across the waiting room etc.

Hi, further to the last posting, my brother, who works for CAB, tells me that in some cases applicants are watched from the moment they get out of the car on the car park! i would never advocatte lying, but do always let them see what your worst days are like, not your best. As the posting above says, forget pride and forcing yourself to do something you know will hurt you later - simply tell them that you can't do something, either because its too painful right then, or because you know from experience that if you do it it will affect you badly at a later time. It's also a very good idea to take some notes with you, to remind you of what you want them to understand about how you are affected day to day. (This is from a woman who used to make the effort to put make up on and do her hair to go to the GP!) Good luck.

I had ATOS Doc come see me and I think it's for the best to be honest, they are much more qualified in my opinion than the people that interview you over the phone or do the assessments from ATOS, They are Independant doctors apparently, mine turned up and I told him everything...No holds barred "everything"..He seemed sympathetic and when I saw his report he had agreed with my application and recommended I did indeed meet the criteria....However they STILL turned me down!! I wrote a letter immediately asking why they would ignore the advice of their own Doctor and was it common practice to pass it to someone who had never met me to make the final decision (which is what they'd done,it was in the report) within 48 hours, I kid you not I ad another letter stating they had looked at my case again and they had reversed it completely!!..I almost fell off my chair (which would have been doubly painful as we all know).. So hang in there, let them visit, tell them everything and stick up for yourself if needs be, you've got nothing to lose, GOOD LUCK X X X

Hi All

Thanks for all your advice - I've just got another letter today and my home visit is next tuesday the 29th! Can't believe it is so quick.

Which is probably a good thing for me so I don't have too much time to sit and ponder.... I've heard that they might even check your house out to see if your meds are in view or your walking stick looks used, is this right?

Nervous but pleased as it looks like I'll be another step nearer a decision one way or another. Hey ho, it's quite a rollercoaster isn't it !
