I had an ATOS appointment for a different benefit assessment a while back(Industrial Injuries benefit) . Unlike some on the board I found my assessor to be quite approachable.

If you can bring someone with you ....I got very stressed waiting to see the Dr and so having a companion calmed me down. They also acted as my memory when I wasn't able to remember answers to question and were able to give a carers perspective on occasion .

Bring a typed list or repeat perscription list of ALL your meds (even some you maybe don't take daily or for conditions other than FM . I was advised that as I had other conditions they could interact with my main complaint and so under thier point system you may qualify for more points)

A list of all Dr & hospital appointments was also helpful. (let the Dr and then the assessor see any tests, hospital treatments you had)

My Dr was quite good in guiding me through the questions and kept asking me for the worst case senario of how I felt and asking out of 7 days how many of these would I be affected to the high level and then any other level.

Good luck , hope things go well

At my ESA assessment last month I was determined to be prepared and organised as we have all read the horror stories of these assessments havent we.

As I had requested, the assessment was recorded which in itslf put me at ease because I knew that the assessor could hardly lie (too much) when being recorded. My son also came with me for support.

I decided that carrying a handbag could be used against me so my son took all the additional info and medications in his 'manbag' for me.

I wore comfy clothes and shoes, a little lip gloss and I combed my hair. I did not make a special effort because in all honesty this is how I dress and appear 99% of the time but I did look presentable.

From what I have read on many forums there appears to be a minority of people (hell bent on getting benefits) who turn up at these assessments with their carers, looking disheveled, unkempt, smelly even. I'm sorry, but if you have a carer surely it is their job to help you look presentable. I think it's chancers like these who give the genuinely disabled bad press. Please don't :face-slap: :shooting: me for being truthfull.

He also took notes during the assessment which seamed to knock the assessor of guard somewhat. The assessor appeared quite aggitated throughout the whole 30 minutes although he was very polite and friendly towards me.

I was not given a physical examination which worried me somewhat. The assessor decided that he had sufficient information to end the meeting and that he would be advising DWP that I be put in the support group.

I received my dreaded brown letter a couple of weeks later and was put into the support group, to my surprise :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

I am still waiting for a complete copy (they sent me an incomplete copy) of the written medical report (ESA85) to see which discriptors have been used to put me into the support group.

I am under no illusions that I will shortly be contacted again to complete another ESA50 and attend another assessment so I hope to be prepared for that too.

Please note that the assessment was conducted by a qualified health worker (a nurse) not a DR or specialist.

I would advise anyone to Google as much info and read up on different forums (not just fibro forums) how others have been affected by the assessment.

Maybe do a diary of your daily symptoms and how it effects your ability to do simple tasks and whats aids and support you need.

They want to know about your daily life and how the conditions effect you.

They are mainly seeing if there is apart of your symptoms that will not effect a form of employement as well.

good luck

Might as well start on your appeal case now, and write up some information or a letter describing your problems

It is good to research these to see what they may ask/do in way of tryin to trip you up!

Seems they are not intrested in your actual illnesses but instead finding a minute way possible to make you *fit for work*

Hiya. Yes, just be yourself to be honest. Take someone with you for moral support, as well. You entitled to take someone even the room with you. You can even ask for a male or female assessor. I agree with the above person, i think it was lolabolla... Even though you musn't look to posh and glitzy, but don't go in there looking like a scruff either...most people know that unless one is to the point that one is severely paralyzed or severely mentally out of it or homeless that even severely disabled peopld can still function to some degree, especially if they got a carer. I know that sounds harsh but it's true. Also, just say what you need to say but don't overdue it. If you can, take medical statements from any gp's or specialist backing your reason to needing the benefit. To be honest, I think it's pot luck with disability benefits...some are lucky, some are sadly are not. To me, I think that atos/jobcentre plus should get one's specialist or own gp to send reports to atos instead of doing assessments...i know people have got to be properly assessed, but atos are putting unnecessary stress and pressure on innocent disabled people. Take care, and all best.

thank you again for all your replies

today was the day
I am relieved that it is over
had no idea what to expect
my horror vision was that there were three people sitting raised up opposite of me
that was not how it was
the assessment was in an office
not too cold or hot, not too small or large
the lady was thourow (?) and nice (I know, most of them are nice and that they are not the decision makers)
I didn't go on my own
my Pastor came alomng and helped me out when my brain drew a blank
so all in all, the experience was not too bad

report shalll reach me in the next couple of weeks
will keep you posted
