housing benefit.

Postby gimpyphil » Tue Oct 23, 2012 1:02 pm

Hi,I am new to here and not sure if anyone has talked about this on here? I recived a letter from my council(horsham) telling me that as I have a two bedroom house I will have to pay to carry on living where we are,it works out that we will have to pay £65 a month.
I wrote to my MP,Nick Herbert and asked him surely as I have trouble sleeping we sleep in separate rooms,he got back saying it does not matter,my wife lives at the address and cannot be counted as a carer so we would have to pay the difference or move to a smaller house.
The council grant was going to put a stairlift in and a wetroom for me,we have had to tell them we will not be able to go ahead as we cannot afford the £65 a month to stay where we are.
This will mean we have until next April to find a one bedroom house or bungalow to move to.Our housing assocition tell me they do not have anything that we can move to so we will have to find our own swop with someone else.
They say we should try and look for a private rental if we cannot get a swop, how many landlords are going to allow a stairlift and wetroom be put in their property?
This is yet another badly thought out idea by the tories who are trying their best to grind us into the ground,my depression is taking over me,every day I wake up wishing that I had not.
Just wondered if this has happned to anyone else?

It is coming into force next April and anyone deemed to have spare rooms has to pay a percentage of their rent if they claim any amount of housing benefit. 14% for one spare room and 25% for two or more. http://www.facebook.com/groups/antibedroomtax/ has full details for anyone in doubt. There are lots of people going to be affected by this, you are not alone

Hiya,
This has been the way Housing Benefit has been calculated for years.
I used to work for the benefits department and all housing benefit claims are based on the needs of the occupants status, gender and age.
There is no allowance for extra bedrooms for anyone who has sleeping difficulties etc....
I handled cases where a claimant was actually terminally ill and needed specialist medical equipment in their bedroom and they did not even qualify for any special allowance for their extreme circumstances.

Sorry I know this doesn't help you in any way.

Take care. :-)

I think with this one there is only one maybe a few exemptions which isnt enough! :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono:

I understand grouping up children into one room if there same sex/age etc but disabled/terminaly ill/pensioners need to have some sort of exemption.

Though I am applying for it I expect I wont get Housing Benefit, if you are under 25 you can only get it if you live in a bedsit.

They dont appreciate that I cannot do stairs and as such any 1 bedroom flat or studio are out of the question as they are always upstairs. They dont accept that I cant always shower and will need a bath. Nor do they accept that a grotty downstairs flat with no furnishing and reeking of damp will exacerbate my condition.

Not hopeful.

Have you claimed for a Discretionary Housing Payment? This is a fund to bridge the gap between what you are awarded via Housing Benefit and what your actual rent is - we were initially awarded it for 4 months with advice to find a more affordable house - after that I reapplied stating that I was too ill to relocate and we have been adapting this house for my needs and they have re-awarded it until the end of the financial year - we get £25 a week on top of our Housing Benefit.

We currently live in a 3 bedroom house, but only receive Housing Benefit for a two bedroomed house as that is what they deem we need.....is this what you are talking about? Or will I lose another 14% off my awarded benefit next April?
