Came off SMP, went on to Income Support & Carers ... HELP!

Postby shell7088 » Tue Apr 02, 2013 7:34 pm

In a nutshell, I was in a good job earning £23k before I went on maternity leave. I have been struggling for a few years to cope at work due to symptoms. I had an extremely painful pregnancy and things deteriorated after I gave birth, which I struggled to understand. I was diagnosed with fibro (and I have no doubt it is) recently. I hear of people applying for DLA but I have further complications in that my 16 year old gets DLA. I am now on Income Support as I left my job as I knew I would not be able to do it any more, due to symptoms, being a single mum and having a new born baby and a 16 year old with problems too (ADHD, cognitive difficulties, Aspergers and autistic spectrum disorder)
How would it work if I was to apply for DLA as I am getting Carers for my son?

It makes no difference you can claim carers and dla together if you was awarded dla your income support would increase due to premiums you would be entitled to (ex dwp worker and income support deputy manager)

In theory claiming carers shouldn't affect dla claim, the carers section of disability and carers dwp tell you this all the time. I was turned down for dla and failed big style on appeal....why...because how can I care if I'm that bad! Dlas explanation, appeal said 5 doc and specialist reports w
Held little weight as I managed to be a carers still, I pointed out and quoted date time of call to carers where they said although I rang the. To say I don't qualify for carers any more as I can no longer do the physical things, they said I should still get it as I watch over interact and teach verbal skills etc to my child with severe disabilities. .......dwp and appeal said, no . Cab also said this is a very common occurrence now. Ended carers, re applied to dla a year later and got dla and it was noted on my claim I was no longer fit to be a carer! S be carefull it's wrong and may not happen in all cases, but I was refused dla and took over 18 months to appeal....and another year before I even dared claim again..the tribuneral people were awful.
