Benefits?

Postby cookiemart » Sun Apr 26, 2015 9:08 pm

Hi, ive recently been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, ive been on the sick since last October, I get 72 pounds sick per week, I was a self employed carpenter/builder but my knees and back became too bad to continue working, I have been to the local CAB but didn't really find them much use, I have been turned down pip twice and its now gone to appeal.
Does anyone know what else I should be able to claim as I have been living off my credit cards and am now at the end of my rope, I get council tax reduction and water rates reduction but I have a mortgage and get no housing help, I have 3 children aged 3, 10 and 17, I don't know how im expected to live my wife is on base rate dla for her ailment.
If fm is classed as a disability how can you not qualify? Crazy!
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Sounds like you haven't had your medical assessment for your ESA? £72 is the pre-assessment stage amount. You are supposed to have it at the 16 week stage but yours is well overdue. If you haven't called the Jobcentre then do so as they can tell you who your medical assessor will be and then you can contact them to chase. Why is your wife only on DLA? Does she work? If she does then Working Tax Credits could be what is a benefit not applied for? Contact the charity Turn2Us who will do a full benefit check for free for you. They'll tell you if Discretionary Housing Payments are only for rent. Each council have their own schemes. I was a self-employed Social Worker until I sustained an injury in January 2013 and eventually got signed off sick a month later. I had to fight and navigate through the systems I used to help my clients do. Have you found an organisation who can help you with your appeal for PIP? I have heard it depends on the CAB office whether you get help. Google Disability Rights UK and hopefully on their website you'll find something like that such as a charity who specialise in benefit law. Have you had any Occupational Therapy or Social Services help for you? Are you seeing any specialists regarding your diagnosis? What medication are you on? These are all the things that give you the points to be able to prove your disability? We struggled for a year with only one wage, no council tax reduction, practically no Housing benefit and the pre-assessment stage ESA so I know how hard it is. Is your wife your full-time carer or is it the other way around? Carer's Assessment is one benefit no one ever tells anyone. Also if you are on income-based benefits it means all prescriptions are free, eye tests, etc. Ask the Jobcentre. If you are on contribution-based then you can apply through the NHS Low Income Scheme. In my Borough they have grants available for income-based benefits, which I can't apply for. Hope all this helps you!
