Family Afternoon in Horsham

Hi Folks
Thought this might be of interest to some of you who live in West Sussex or Surrey.

Throughout the UK, events will be taking place to broaden people’s awareness and knowledge of this debilitating illness. Coffee mornings, fund raising and sponsored events, special meetings - and media coverage will mark these events. The Fibromyalgia Support Group for Surrey and Sussex will be staging a family fibromyalgia information afternoon on Saturday 15th September from 1.30pm – 4.30pm; Doors open 1-00 pm, at the Y Centre, Albion Way, Horsham, West Sussex RH12 1AH (Opposite the Malt Shovel).

This meeting has been organised to inform those affected by Fibromyalgia; children, young people, adults and their carers and families. All are welcome.

The meeting will consist of different speakers who will offer help on how to have a better quality of life; help in understanding and managing the condition better and give an insight into what is available to help this to be achieved. The main speaker will be Dr Carla Maclaren a working Scottish G.P. and Fibromyalgia and ME sufferer for 18 years who met Jo Fisher (Founder and Development officer) recently in Washington DC at the 7th World International Congress on Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Syndrome Conference for doctors. Both Carla and Jo won scholarships to this prestigious event as Patient advocates and as support group leaders. Never before has a patient group been allowed to participate at this level to influence the scientific community and their attitude in treating and researching FM.
Carla has offered to talk at the awareness event to improve people’s understanding of the symptoms of this punishing illness and how it affects the individual and those around them. However in her own unique style she welcomes specific questions about Fibromyalgia and is happy to share her personal experiences of how it affects people from her patient observation and her own life changing struggles.
Admission is £2 which includes light refreshments. Tickets are limited, so those wishing to attend are asked to apply for them from FMS SAS, 14 Singleton Road, Broadbridge Heath, Horsham, West Sussex RH12 3NP. Tel: 01403 255450 Car parking is available close to the Y Centre.

Fibromyalgia is manifested by pain in the soft body tissues; muscles, tendons and fibrous areas. It is usually accompanied by sleep disorders, temporary memory loss, restless legs syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, migraines etc. and is therefore referred to as a syndrome itself – Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS). It affects more women than men (9:1) and includes children and teens. Approx 3% of the population are affected but it is thought that many people have it without realising because of lack of diagnosis. Anyone showing these symptoms is strongly advised to attend the meeting and find out more.
