MS mistaken for Fibro???

Postby Mrswalker74 » Fri Aug 24, 2012 9:33 pm

Has anyone been diagnosed with Fibro then been told sometime later that they actually have MS? I only ask as I'm starting to wonder if it is just Fibro I have, although I do have Ostioarthritis as well. I'm not sure of alot of things anymore to he honest :(

Hi i was tested for MS before fibro was diagnosed.it is because they are so alike. I had a full Mri scan and a lumbar puncture to rule MS out. Not sure if this helps but my Dr isvery good and expliained evreything to me and did so many tests to rule evreything else out.

MS mistaken for Fibro???

Postby Mrswalker74 » Fri Aug 24, 2012 10:35 pm

Your lucky to have a good doctor! :) I remember going to mine with horrific tonsillitis and he tried to make out it was the Fibro! He also insisted on cutting down my meds as he reckoned I'm on too many, ( although he prescribed them all ) But once one of the other doctors found this out, he upped them again! Maybe it is just the Fibro that is causing me so much pain etc, I'm just still trying to get my head round all of it and discovering more info on it everyday. I was diagnosed last year, but I still have my "denial" days ;)

My mum has MS so I had an MRI Scan and confirmed 99% not MS.. I have FM and a lot of symptoms mimic MS except its not life threatening so I suppose I feel lucky. My nan died of MS an although not hereditary it can be passed down or so the neurologist told me... my mum is reg. Blind and i dont think FM has that to contend with... sending hugs to all :)

Hi, my mum has M.S and i have Fibro. I did have my doubts that drs misdiagnosed me? but ive had m.r.i and c.t scans, so i spose thay would've shown up signs of m.s. I haven't had a lumbre puncture though. The two definately mimic each other and even now after4 yrs of fibro i feel that i have deteriorated so much that i do still have thoughts. And worries of a misdiagnosis? Bigs hugs to u all xxx

MS mistaken for Fibro???

Postby Mrswalker74 » Sat Aug 25, 2012 1:18 am

@chelseagirl- I only got diagnosed last October, but my condition has been ongoing for yrs, and it's getting worse. So I feel exactly how you do. I've had two emergency MRI scans, only due to the potential threat of a disc hitting the spinal cord, so I'm not sure if they have checked either of the scans for signs of ms.
I am seeing a neurologist soon, so hopefully I can be put at peace with my worries xx

Hello, I have Fibromyalgia and was diagnosed in February with it but have been suffering with it for about 6 years. My mother has M.S and Altsimers (not sure if it's spelt right :-? ) but I am worse with my mobility and memory than she is. I did ask my Dr if I had the same and he said no but people do make mistakes. I left the cooker on this evening and because it's electric I can't see anything, so I put my plastic laundry basket on it not knowing and an hour later my hubby went to the kitchen and the basket had melted over the cooker, I left it on yesterday and found out from my hubby that last week I'd done it a couple of times as well. I see my specialist at the hospital in 2 weeks time and my hubby said he's coming with me to tell her how bad I'm getting. Now I'm worried :( .

Because of the bad shakes i get I did get tested for alsymers (however its spelled), with a clear result for not having it, but am absolutely hopeless with memory etc...a side effect of both fibro and the meds I think, I'm sure many of us have times where we'd burn the house down if we were doing similar household chores. I must say though, it's been a very long time since i was able to lift a laundry basket onto a cooker type level, or even put anything in the oven or lift a pan :( on the plus side it does mean i have far less of these type incidents.
Its always worth having this checked (like altsymers,ms etc) i think far too many docs put everything down to fibro, which is a deamon at hiding other things.

I have to make sure I turn the cooker off at the plug now after leaving it on so much. My husband and kids (11 and 13) do most of cooking now or help me as I ALWAYS burn myself or cut myself so they have to supervise, lol. Good job I introduced my kids to cooking when they were young. I can just about manage to warm something up but tend to use microwave and leave it in. Always finding things that were supposed to be part of the meal in there days after, lol. Good job we can laugh!! :-P  Not sure about M.S symptoms being close the FM. Not compared, but know FM is close to ME, but ME is still one of those make believe illnesses that we all fake, a bit like FM was! :nono: :nono: :nono:

I'm off to a neuro in a couple of months to discuss potential Ms. My left hand isn't working well and I've had problems on and off for years. Hope it is "just" fibro lol but good to get it checked. One thing MS doesn't have tender points does it?

Hmmm.... beginning to get a bit worried now, as I seem to be the 4th person on this thread to say "my Mum has MS and I have Fibromyalgia" Mum had MS when I was born and having cared for her for many years, it has always been in the back of my mind....how she is day to day and how likely it would be for me or my children to get MS?! I did ask a GP years ago if it was possibly a genetic problem and he told me no, not to worry about it. I have had symptoms of fibro for at least 10 years, but only got a diagnosis in May this year! My mobility is pretty much the same as my Mum, and my pain is managed by the same medication too! It really makes you wonder if more research is needed to see
If pregnant women already diagnosed with MS could affect their children?!

It would be very interesting to have a poll on how many of us have mothers with MS and how many don't??

Sending hugs Mollymoo52 :-) interesting that a neurologist told you that MS can be passed down... sort of compounded by the fact that your Nan and your Mum had it eh?! Glad that you don't have it.. like you I feel lucky with a diagnosis of fibro! That's bad enough  x

Hi MrsWalker

MS will show up on a MRI scan where as fibro does not show up on any tests.

The only way you can be 100% you have MS will be to have a scan, have you mentioned your worries to your gp? if not make an apt to see him and seek his advice. :goodluck1:

@ babajane32... the washing basket was empty :( . I shuffle around at home with the help of a trolley. My medication is in a dosset box, I have to have help with putting my clothes on. I can't go out on my own any longer. My memory isn't totally due to the medication, everybody is different. I have joined this forum, to read about others experiences with Fibromyalgia and to write about mine, I haven't joined for others to tell me that they are worse than me and all the rest of it!!!!
