Muscle knots/swelling

Postby geo » Tue Jul 23, 2013 8:17 pm

Hey all

Just wanted to ask, does fibro cause muscle knots and swelling? went to see a message therapist for some relief on my shoulders and upper back and she said my muscles were insanely tight with knots and swelling.

I've pretty much got tight muscles everywhere, and knots all over as well ;(

Cheers x

I suffer dreadfully from this problem. I have to have treatment from a chiropractor, massage therapist & acupuncturist to try & get the muscles to release themselves. They hold on for all they are worth & I have to constantly stretch & try to keep warm & moving otherwise I am house bound due to the pain. Its a constant battle!

This is one of the main characteristics of fibromyalgia (before known as fibrosis)

The stiffness is what causes the majoirty of the pain and restricted movement.

These muscle knots / trigger points press on nerves also and causes muscle pain.

If you press on one the pain will radiate to other areas , this can cause all sorts of pain. Normaly if you get a tension headache the trigger point is in the neck somewhere. If the physio presses on a knot in my front chest wall the pain radiates down my arm to my fingers

Like the poster above this is my main symptom and i am covered from head to foot in them and need trigger point physio to be able to move / breathe / eat and swollow

To release the stiffness you need to masage / press down (few mintues) on the area but with fibro soon as you release the tighness it starts to tighten back up. Its the nature of the illness

Thanks for the replies, yeah it is a massive pain as you say Lisa.

I seem to have these lumps on both of my upper arms, like between bicep and tricep, and whenever i press it it sends a shooting pain down my arm into my hand. Im not sure if its pressing on a nerve which is giving me the constant pain in my arms/wrists/hands.

Yes that be the nerve pain. Exactly what i get although my physio thinks im wired up wrong inside  as i tell her where the pain travels when she presses the lumps/knots/points  and she gets puzzled  but she specialises in muscles not nerves :-?

The stiffness can press on the nerves and in fact some night i wake up with a dead leg as the back stiffness is so bad its pressed hard on the nerves and sent my leg asleep
