Hi Tracie,

I have IBS. I have had it for about 5 years, and it was one of the first symptoms of fibro. I take buscopan to help with the cramps and avoid certain foods. I used to take codeine for fibro pain which worked pretty well but caused IBS to get much worse so I was taken off of them.

The only thing I have found that helps slightly is to only have 1 cup of coffee a day, avoid citrus and onions, and try not to take any ibuprofen, as this makes my stomach very bad.

I had a sample tested by my dr when I first started going to see him about it. It came back as possibly a bacterial overgrowth, and I was put on a course of metronidazole, but this didn't really do anything.

I hope you get some help.

There is an otc version of Buscopan that can be bought from pharmacies incl Boots, and Lloyds. Maybe you could contact your local ones to see if they have it, or something similar, available to buy and whether it might be suitable to use to tide you over until you can get an appt with your GP.

Hi Tracie,
Apologies for delay. Internet has been down for 2 weeks. Almost sent me crazy!

Buscopan is available in supermarkets as well. I buy mine from Tesco. It is £3 for 20 tablets. More expensive than getting a prescription but it tides me over when I can't get in to the dr for a check up or to the pharmacy to collect my prescription.

I have had 2 colonoscopies and a sigmoidoscopy. I had biopsies taken and all came back normal. The specialist was thinking it could be the start of ulcerative colitis which is why I had another colonoscopy. Sigmoidoscopy was done first but I was in so much pain and spasm was so bad he couldn't do it (I was fully conscious and no pain relief given). He gave up in the end.

I am in a bad way again at the moment. I have been camping out in the loo for the last 3 evenings and this morning was touch and go as to whether I would get to work on time. I do feel for you. It is probably one of my worst symptoms of fibro. I can almost cope with the others but IBS really takes control of me when I am bad. I have the day off tomorrow and I am going to see the chiropractor so hoping I wil feel a bit better after a good massage and realignment!

Take care and if you get anything that helps you, let me know! I will try anything to reduce the problems!

Tracie...I also have IBS. It seems that quite a few if not all of people with fibro present symptoms of IBS in some degree.
Try to get back in to see the GP, If he suggests IBS and gives you a prescription great. Going that way you may get a faster diagnosis as well as you are not waiting for a spec and having to do prep work for testing that may not be necessary.
