do i need a letter?

Postby shelley2302 » Fri Apr 25, 2014 7:40 pm

hi
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia about 10 days ago and after reading some of these posts it got me thinking do I need a letter to confirm that I have it or will other doctors just look at my notes?
sorry if this is a silly question but I have never been diagnosed with anything before and is there anything else I need to get from the doctor as I am going back to the doctors on Friday?
is there anything I need to get just in case I have to go to hospital?
I am very new to this and this is the first thing I am having to deal with myself as I am 20 and my mum has normally helped me out with stuff like this but as you can see from an early post from me I don't have her support with this.
any help will be very helpful
thank you in advance

Hi shelley

When I got diagnosed I was told by the rhuematologist who diagnosed me to wait to hear from the doctor about starting the medication that she wanted me to take. It was three weeks before the doctors surgery contacted me to make an appointment. They had to wait to get a letter from which my doctors notes were updated and then it was all in front of them in future appointments. Those three weeks were hell so we all know what you are going through, I would call your surgery to tell them the situation and ask them what they think you should do.
Good luck. x

When i was diagnosed, my rhuemetologist sent me a letter saying what she had diagnosed me with. Maybe it was due to me asking her since at the time i was on JSA but i'm sure they'd send you something to confirm their findings. If you're unsure, just give them a ring and ask for a letter. I'm sure they won't mind!

Altho it isn't absolutely essential to have written confirmation of your dx as there should be details about it in your files, at times it can be helpful, such as when applying for benefits and/or other things that are wanting to know about your conditions. Whilst such people/organisations could contact who it was that gave you your dx, this could take time, whereas having something in writing means you can include a copy of it, as a good number will accept it as the evidence they are requiring.

If it is a specialist that gave you your dx, they tend to ask if you want copies of any letters that they may send out. If it was your GP that dx'd you, they tend not to send out a confirmation letter, but you could always contact your dx'ing doc and ask for written confirmation.
