Is it fibro or my meds causing burning and crawling?

Postby salkav78 » Sat Aug 30, 2014 8:16 pm

I have ME and fibromyalgia and recently some of my symptoms have been getting unbearable. I've been getting numbness and tingling all over my body and the feeling I have got ants crawling under my skin. I went to my doctor and asked if I took cocaine I felt totally insulted. He then said he thought it was my meds interacting (tramadol and sertraline) I was worried it could be MS but he said no so I asked if it was my fibro and he said you don't get tingling and numbness from fibro just pain but that's nonsense I know. He made me feel like it was all in my head... Does anyone else get this sometimes the tingling is so bad I become restless and irritable and can't keep still. It's like pins and needles tingling and burning and then a dull throbbing ache. I'm so fed up I just want answers. I have areas of permanent numbness .. Please does anyone else get this?

I get it too. My doc gave me gabapentin which keeps it under control most of the time but when it gets really bad I have 2mg diazepam and I use 1 at a time til it works. Don't let him fob you off - it is definitely fibro!! :!: :!: :grouphug:
Good luck x

Thank you all for replying sometimes I feel like I'm going mad. Been reducing my medication as the gp said it could be interacting with each other so am taking 50mg sertraline and 1 tramadol in morning and 1 tramadol in evening but it feels like its getting worse not better its getting me down. I used to be on gabapentin but didn't work for me and put loads of weight on with it. Has anyone tried pregabilin and does it work?

Some people may think it's the tablets, then think again. If you have Had a an accident, or had a fall, also can cause fibromyalgia. If you have Fibromyalgia, you can Have a number Of health issues, such as cfs ( chronic fatigue syndrome) and cpd ( chronic pain disorder) I have 1 tramadol at night and that eases the pain a little bit at night, plus my normal medication.

I don't get the burning but I am getting the crawling - particularly at night when I'm trying to sleep - it's dreadful - and after having fibro for a few years now it is new and unwelcome - I take amitryptilene and ibuprofen but have still developed this symptom. Hope it gets easier for you - I know how it feels x

I think the crawling is the worst especially when trying to sleep sometimes makes me feel like ending it all even though I wouldn't but that's how bad it makes me feel and nothing helps...

Did any of them make any difference to your fibro better or worse?

Duloxetine is the recommeded go to of anti-depressants for treating fibro. I was on Lofepramine for 15 years after 5 years trying various SRRI's and SNRI's, but when diagnosis was fnally confirmed last year, they switched me to Duloxetine, which is an SNRI. Now it definately helped reduce pain, but unfortunately SNRI's and SRRI's really disagreed with me and I had the same reactions as I did in the past, making it impossible to stay on it. So had to return to Lofepramine, and I literally felt the pain returning bit by bit. So gutted I can't take Duloxetine, but it was good to know it helped the pain. If thats any help for you.

In regards to the burning, tingling, numbness and crawling sensations, they all seem very common to fibro, but I have found they can be made worse by reactions to medication, food intolerances, being in the one position for long periods, even just using a certain part of the body for any time. I get it in my legs if I walk, in my arms if I write, knit, sew, hold a cup, book etc. I think keeping a note of when they occur and what you may have had or done in your day helps you to see the triggers, and in knowing the triggers it helps to be a bit accepting of the symptom sometimes.

In regards to Tramadol, I know I cannot mix it with certain medications or I get hallucinations. I have chronic insomnia, hence the 5.50am reply (trying to wean off the sleeping pills so bright as a button tonight  ). Tramadol and Zolpidem are not a good combination for me. I wasn't just feeling the crawling I was seeing it and ants were oozing out my eyes. I was in bed watch myself standing at the mirror watching these transparent ants crawl from my feet up, through my face and out my eyes.... ....first trip I had ever been on and I don't see the appeal at all. Never had that combination of drugs again and have been  free since...

Unfortunately with fibro there can be many contributors and sometimes none for the symptoms you experience. It is a bit of trial and error and a great deal of body awareness of yourself and getting a better understanding of your triggers. I found one of my worst food triggers to be rice of all things. Walking at any time will always cause the burning, tingling, crawling, pins and needles etc in the evening just after 9.30pm, everytime. I can stop eating rice, butI still have to walk, so I've learned to be accepting and work with numbing the nerves using cold, or voltarol gel, which works better for me than pill form medication.

Hope this is of some help
With loving kindness

None of them to date even dealt with the depression let alone the pain. The duloxetine I've only been on a few weeks so probably too early and too low a dose at the moment but I'm not expecting it to work tbh so if it does it'll be a pleasant surprise.

I'm wondering these days if I'm bipolar rather than being depressed which would explain why the antidepressants don't work.
