Familiar to anyone?

Postby Butterfly8588 » Thu Feb 26, 2015 3:58 am

Hiya,
I hope you're all doing as well as you can. I've been doing reasonably ok recently with pain thankfully, although my other symptoms have persisted badly but the last 2 days or so I've been getting some very odd 'spells' for want of a better word and wondered if anyone can relate.
Basically I'll be my normal self minding my own business and then all of a sudden I get this awful feeling like I can't breathe and there's an obstruction in my throat (there isn't and I can breathe it just feels like I cant) my chest and throat feel heavy and I start to struggle to be able to hold my head up, like the muscles are physically to weak to do so. I then feel extremely tired and it's a terrible effort to talk like my mouth won't co operate and I can barely think.
I've had an attack of this tonight and its the longest its lasted but this time it's come with a sore throat and a strange sensation at the back of my throat/nose like a worm slithering. I've not been anywhere tropical and I hardly eat meat so I'm pretty certain I have nothing like an actual worm, again it's just the sensation.
I think what makes these things so scary is I can then 'snap' out of it and feel like me again, although admittedly tonight I still feel unwell. I have been under strain the last 2 weeks, particularly the last 3 days and I'm thinking this might explain it but just wonderrd if this sounds familiar to anyone else?

Thank you in advance xx

Hi there, the below:

sounds like a panic attack to me. I get them occasionally, and although I hate the feeling of the throat closing, it's not too much of a bother, as I know what it is.

However, I got no idea what the worm feeling could possibly be... mucus? It might be a good idea to pop by the doc and explain, and hopefully they can put your mind to rest.

(I did give it a quick google, (panic attack and feeling like a worm in the throat), but got nothing up connecting the two... although I did like this poem about anxiety being like a worm: http://hellopoetry.com/poem/468165/anxiety/ )

I would definitely go to get it checked out with your GP just to rule out anything serious.

I have ended up in hospital on two occasions with the same thing and was told by the FMS specialist that its the FM affecting the muscles in my chest.

I have post-nasal drip which feels like I'm swallowing snails, this can also contribute to a sore throat and a cough. I use Beconase nasal spray (2 squirts up each nostril 2x a day for 2 months) on prescription. But best if you go and see your GP.

Brown paper bag for hyperventilating, but get it checked out with your GP.

I've had this for the last week and a half, I *think* it started as a cold but now with extra dry mouth side effect from the tramadol it just won't shift, and I do find myself struggling to catch my breath. For me it's not quite a panic attack though as I know what they are like, so I'm hoping it's just a bug and will pass.

I get a feeling of having a lump stuck in my throat around my collar bone area, I have headaches, dry mouth and feel nauseous. This can come and go but I always have the same symptoms at the same time. I had attributed it to clenching my jaw, which I do as a side effect from tramadol, but I am now being weaned off it and the symptoms are getting worse even though the clenching is easing.

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply to you all, I've actually not been awake very much of yesterday and today, I really did crash like I knew I would.
I'm almost certain I'm not having panic attacks, when I say I feel like I'm struggling to breathe I don't mean as in hyperventilating I mean like I'm trying to breathe round something. Sorry I don't know if I'm making myself very clear here!
My partner wonders if I'm getting a muscle spasm/twitch in my throat which could explain why my throat feels tight, why it feels so sore like it's bruised and why my voice went really hoarse. Even now my throat feels delicate, it's hard to explain but thankfully I've not had anymore episodes since Wednesday night.
This damn tiredness is really upsetting my though, I'm not to bad when I'm sat still but as soon as I start doing something I can feel myself crashing. Cue worse fog then normal and broken china. I don't know, I try not to let it get to me anymore but sometimes it really does.
By the way, upon my Google travels I came across a fibromyalgia check list which was very extensive and is offered as a way of being able to explain your symptoms to the Dr I think. I won't post a link because I don't know if I'm allowed but type Dr Berne's fibromyalgia checklist in to Google and it's the first one that comes up, in my search anyway, if you're interested.

Take care and thanks again xxx

I am glad you are going to talk to your GP. Hope they can at least give you some reassurance even if they cannot solve it.

My GP originally diagnosed me with asthma, but i didn't have a wheeze, just couldn't get my breath. When i was seen by the specialist, when i explained things to her, she just replied that you don't develop asthma at 43 for no reason, and then went on to say it was the Fibro effecting the muscles in my chest wall.

I is scary when it happens, so don't be worried to call out the cavalry if you need them. I have ended up in hospital twice with it in recent years.

FMS is just so crazy x

My mum has told me to go and see my GP as I've now had this problem for 2 weeks and it's just not clearing.
