Bad doctors

Postby hcp » Fri Oct 30, 2015 9:31 pm

When I was 10 years old I was admitted to hospital with appendicitis. I was prepped for an operation but there was a bad car accident so my procedure was delayed. By the time it was re-scheduled I was feeling a bit better so they sent me home. Over the next three years I was in and out of hospital until they finally removed my appendix at age 13. Since then I have had a fear of doctors. They didn't believe that I was ill (even though my appendix was 3 times the size it was meant to be and ready to burst) and tried to imply that I was faking my illness because I was being abused at home. My parents were lovely and this accusation made me very very angry! I think that these events triggered my fibro, as I never managed a full week at school or college after that, and have never worked more than 16 hours a week.

A couple of years ago I bit the bullet and went to my doctors. They referred me to a rheumatologist. My experience of this so called specialist was horrific. She told me that I did not have fibro, I have "tight hamstrings". So how does this explain why I sleep so much, or drop things because my hands get stuck and won't move, or my IBS, or headaches, muscle twitches, dizzy spells, forgetting the words for things, pain everywhere, etc etc? It put me off again and I've been suffering in silence yet again. I'm thinking about asking for another referral as I am in a new area and will not see the woman I saw last time who thinks that yoga is the cure to everything! I'm scared to say the least. I've never been taken seriously and doctors set off my anxiety

Ay tips would be most welcomed xxx

I was assigned a rheumatologist who diagnosed osteoarthritis on my first visit 3 years ago. Once my condition got worse, I asked my gp for another referral. Unfortunately I ended up with the same rheumatologist whose first words to me were 'why are you here, I told you last time you have to just live with osteoarthritis. Made me feel about an inch tall.

My gp had been amazing, and as my condition has deteriorated so quickly, she 're-scheduled another rheumatologist appointment. Thankfully I had a very understanding consultant who almost immediately diagnosed fibromyalgia.

Don't give up hope, and ask to see a different rheumatologist.

Good luck x

Sorry you have had such a negative experience.
Can you get yourself referred to a pain management clinic..just TELL your GP you demand a second opinion.
The pain management clinics should be using the new diagnostic criteria, it is the best department to be involved in.
If you don't get any joy, complain to the primary care as you have the right to be referred and diagnosed.

Good luck.x
