Trying to lose weight

Postby pocket » Fri Jul 08, 2011 7:11 pm

I have never been super skinny but I was a respectable size 12/14 for most of my adult life. However since last May I have put on over 3 stone and now am a size 18/20. I knew I was putting on weight but tried to push it out of my mind. If I don't think about it its not happening kind of thing. As you know that doesn't work too well when everything you try to put on doesn't fit lol.

I finally relented and reduced my wardrobe, I did keep a few things that are too small for me at the moment but the smallest size I kept was a size 16. The other day I actually got out a tape measure and found out my measurements for the first time in years. It was enough to shock me into doing something.

This past week I have been eating much healthier, and creating "new" dishes for me that are healthy, tasty and don't leave me feeling like I need to eat something else immediately. I have surprised myself with the different things I have had/thought of containing the stuff I bought but have enjoyed everything I have eaten this week. That I think is half the battle, enjoying what you eat.

I haven't been calorie counting but I have been aware of the calorie counts of my main meals, been eating fruit and low fat yoghurts as snacks instead of dipping into the kids chocolate stash (its so much easier to do that lol). My children eat healthily as well but they do like their snacks and goodies and I will not make them go without because I want to lose some weight. Although sometimes I do have to fight the temptation to dip into their stuff. I don't intend to totally deprive myself, if I really want a snack I will have one, but so far I haven't wanted one enough.

There are quite a few things I can't eat, mostly spices/spicy food, peppers, chillies etc, and so I am having to adjust recipes I find to suit me. Fingers crossed this will help me even if I don't lose any I am hoping I don't put any more on. If anyone has any tips/tricks/recipes to share with me they will be most welcome. Also any hints for very light exercises, I have severe pain all over and so I am struggling to find ones I can do that will have any impact.

Thanks :-)

I need to lose weight as well as I've just been dx'd with diabetes. I am due to see the nurse at our docs who specialises in weight loss/management, as well as other things. If what she says to me about things are helpful and work, I'll add them to here.

We already eat prettily healthy (don't have much choice as we have a teenager that likes proper food   ) so I'm doing a food diary to see what she suggests about improving things even more.

Thank you denys and good luck to you fluppypuffy :-)

I am only weighing myself every two weeks as I don't want to get too discouraged lol. I managed to lose 6lbs in my first fortnight as well as an inch off my hips and an inch off my waist. I have been getting creative with salad ingredients and have had some lovely stir fries from them. I have allowed myself some treats but only in sensible amounts, I know if I tell myself I can't have something then I just want it even more lol. The loss so far has encouraged me to carry on with the good work and hopefully I will keep on losing a little.

I am getting a walker on the 28th (one with a chair and arm rests as I can't put weight on my hands) which should help me to at least get some walking in as exercise which I am hoping again will help.

You're doing well pocket :welldone: :welldone: Sounds like you've got a good balance of things with allowing the treats and still losing weight :woot: :woot:

Carrying on as you are, and with the added benefits from the walker, you'll soon reach your target weight

Putting weight on is so much easier than taking it off isn't it! I've not been able to do any exercise for about 5 weeks due to my hip spontaneously disintegrating whilst out shopping (I have loose ligaments which is probably the cause of my fibro)...and I've put a stone on!! Add that to the half stone I still haven't lost since Christmas...and my selection of 'clothes that still fit' is looking sadly depleted!! School holidays are looming, so my kids have volunteered to be my 'personal trainers'! I'm determined to start swimming, and maybe get the bike out as I struggle with 'impact' exercise like walking....I should be getting some magic insoles over the hols to help with this...so hopefully I can get back to walking too! Other than that, I'm just trying to cut my portion sizes....we do eat healthily as a family (although we do like puddings) ..but I tend to loose sight of what is a healthy portion for me!! :pigoink 1:
Good luck all of you with your diets & exercise plans...
It would be great if we were all slimmer and fitter for the autumn wouldn't it!!

Hi

I decided 2 years ago that i could not go on with the weight I was carrying so I decided to go to my local slimming world, it gives
you loads of ideas for meals and I am like you pocket no spices etc, I cant even have white pepper on my meals, but as far as everyday meals they have alternatives so that you dont feel that your on a diet, previous to diet I used to have spaghetti bolagnase with dolmeo now I make it myself and my OH likes it better I can post or email you plenty of recipes if you like also you can have puddings etc and
they are just as nice, I have a mouth full of sweet teeth, so I need puddings/deserts and so far I have lost 2 and half stone, this is without exercise except the walk around the shops with hubby each week.
Take care when having yogurts that are low fat as they contain different sugars to lower the fat but are still high in calories.

I can't see that there would be problem to posting recipes and helpful tips for losing weight, esp as we have the this weight issues board. I'll double check, just to be sure. I think it would be nice to have some tasty and healthy meal ideas, esp if they are easy to prepare, don't take too long to cook and can easily be adapted to different numbers of servings.

Do either, but some people may not have word so if you paste them everyone will be able to read them and yes stick them on here
