Scared of gaining weight!

Postby susan74 » Tue Feb 21, 2012 3:09 pm

HI all,

I have read through a lot of the posts on weight, but not sure they really cover my issues so here goes......

I have always struggled to cope when I have put on even the smallest bit of weight, but with support from my doc and my family I have managed to not let it get to me (too much anyway), but latelty I have been getting so much worse.

I have to eat to take my meds, and this has always been a bit of a struggle but i have persevered, but last year I was prescribed amitriptyline and my weight shot up - a stone and a half in six weeks. Needless to say I went back to the docs and told him I couldn't take these anymore. My doctor is a VERY understanding person, who leaves a lot of these descisins up to me, and so he supported my choice, and within eight weeks the weight came off.

The trouble I now have is that this weight gain triggered a very prolonged bout of deep depression which I am just pulling myself out of, but I am now struggling to take any of my meds coz I am soooooo scared of putting any weight on again.
I know I need the meds, but I am literally paralysed with pain before I can force myself to eat in order to take the tablets. I was actually so bad the other day I reconsidered the amis - they did work while I was on them - but couldn't get any further than taking the tablets out of the box. I actually sat and looked at them for ages but just couldn't force myself to take them.

I have unfortunately tried all other meds and am either intolerant or simply can't take them due to my food issues.
I am seeing a counsellor, but it is very slow going, and unfortuantely I am putting myself through a lot of pain in the mean time. Obviously this is not good for my depression and I just have no idea what to do. I am aware that nobody can really help me - it's just really getting me more and more down and i needed to share with someone who might have a clue what i mean. Thanks for listening

Hi Susan

I think most of us have the weight gain problem because of the meds, I put on a lot of weight when I was on Gabas, I hated it but I had to give the meds a try to get rid of the pain I was in.

You could take your meds with some healthy food I.e a cereal bar or yogurt, what would you normally eat for breakfast? If you had a small bowl of cereal that will be fine.

As long as you stick to healthy eating you should be ok weight wise, my downfall was chocolate bars and sweets

I have lost the weight now I have cut them out again.

:goodluck1: your gp should be able to give you some advice on when best to take the meds.

Unfortunately a lot of the meds we try to get things under some sort of control have weight gain as a side effect. When that is added to the fact that we are not as active as we used to be, plus how when we start to feel low, it's not unusual to start picking and eating those extra bits and pieces that we would normally ignore or avoid, preFM.

Is the counsellor you're seeing at the moment going to work with you on your weight and food fears?? I know from my own experience the time it can take for any improvements to become apparent. Hopefully tho, with what you'll be going, you'll be able to start using some of the different things you're doing in other areas, which will help things improve as well.

As Shaz as said, trying to eat something healthy when you need to take your meds could be a place to start, as well as trying to eat as healthily and sensibly as you can. If you're still finding it an issue, you could see if your GP can put you in touch with a dietician/nutritionist who could advise you on the best sort of diet that will hopefully minimise any potential weight gain for you.

Thanks for the replies shaz and flup. It's nice to talk to someone who understands! my hubs is great about every other aspect of my FM and depression but when i talk about my weight all i get is "you look great" and "I love you however you are" which is lovely but frustrating.

I have seen dieticians/nutritionists before because my doctor was very concerned about my eating habits (or lack of) but becasue the food I eat is really quiet healthy - it's the lack of that is concerning - they referred back to docs, also becasue i am far from being overweight I thik they thought there was nothing they could do for me - hence the psychologist. He thinks this is going to be a long battle becasue apparantly my fears are deeply ingrained, and my eating regime has been the same for soo long, but having 15+ years of doctors and specialists telling me not to gain weight as it will make my fm worse is it any real surprise i'm scared

I just want to be able to take my meds and ease up on some of the constant pain, but this mental block i have means I just can't.. I'm constantly thinking that if i'm this bad now, how on earth will i be if i get any bigger, and then i just feel trapped into a viscious circle. It's just so bad that my brain prefers me to be in constant agony rather than risk a little weight gain :(

anyway, thanks so much for listening, i'm not really used to reaching out for support - but it's really comforting to know it's there.

It is understandable Sue :hugs: :hugs: As much as food is essential for us, I think most of us have had some sort of love/hate relationship with it at times   I certainly have, and gone from the extreme of binge eating to the other extreme to the point where I was banging on anorexia's door at one point

Has the psychologist you're seeing done anything with you about trying to balance out these thoughts and worries with looking at them in a different way?? It's something that can help with all sorts of situations and may be worth enquiring about. Something else to consider is that altho weight gain can be a side effect of some of the meds we take, that doesn't mean you will be affected by it. The list of side effects relating to a med are things that have been observed and recorded in various people, but that doesn't mean that you will be affected by all or even any of them.
