Thank you all for being understanding and empathetic. I am glad I had these comments, in a way, as it made me think hard and long about how a piece of writing can be interpreted in many ways, especially without the facts behind what fuelled it. I will be putting some of the comments on my website, anon of course, to highlight just this point. I do hope it does not put others off writing about their FM as it is very cathartic and I would never of got passed the terrible things that happened to me without this ability to express my thoughts and feelings through writing. On my site I have highlighted Fibro with explanation of this condition and links to this forum. Please take time to have a browse and read my work as I would appreciate feedback, good or bad, as this is the only way we learn!
Again thank you.

I am sorry i haven't commented again but I have been away. You sound you have had a horrid time over so many years. I talked to my husband about your poem and he said he fully understood your analogy. Sometimes i think i try to be too positive. So do not feel bad about your poem. It is you and what you feel.

Take care

I vote the post should stay!

Im glad people are coping with Fibro, Im unfortunatley not, im slowly sinking further into a manic depression which one day can have me smiling and giggling in hysteria and the next I cant get off the couch and burst into cascades of tears that I simply cant stop

I am hostage, I dont feel its to the illness I feel its due to lack of support, ignorant GP's overworked NHS specialists and employers who just dont care.

Yuo speak your mind, its the only thing you can do

I vote it stays or maybe move it to the creative section???

I don't know if I like the term hostage because when I think of hostage I guess I think of violence etc BUT hostages do not always have vilence met upon them. I don't know.

Thing is though, free country, free speech and this is an expression of how you are feling and we cannot tell you how to feel or that its wrong to feel a certain way etc.

I think, had I been writing it or something similar, i might have used 'captive' instead. I just don't feel like I am held hostage but more that I am 'trapped' I am a captive in my my own body.........

Is there a thread/forum specifically for our writings on fibro? I know several people write as a way to ease things (the emotional aspect of fibro anyway).

I have just read your poem and I can see both sides of people's comments.

I see how people could find it offensive or going a bit too far, but I think that's what makes it effective in highlighting what you felt at the time. I'm sure we've all had days or times where we've felt so bad. I know I have felt like I'm trapped, not able to do anything I used to do or want to do now because it's Fibro that's controlling my life and not me. Sometimes it truly does feel like the walls are closing in, like the Fibro is a captor laughing at me and causing pain and fatigue and depression, looming over me and taking over my world.

Your poem made me cry because it was so frank and I could relate in ways to it.

I also see how people could find it negative, because I try not to let these sorts of feelings take over. I am by nature a pessimistic person and always have been, I can't help it, but I do try and think positive when I can. I push myself to do some simple things sometimes, and though I might suffer physically for it, something in my mind says Well Done and I feel a little better that I managed to achieve something that some days I think is impossible for me. A positive attitude is a great thing, but some of us can't manage it quite all of the time. A few times in my life I've been told "chin up" and I've honestly wanted to punch that person in the face for saying it, because some things I need to cope with in a different way other than smile and accept it.

I too am a writer and I cannot express how much, for some people, writing helps to make you feel so much better. Personally, I like to immerse myself into a world of fantasy and forget about life for a little, but sometimes I've written about how I feel, just a piece for me, never to be seen by anyone else, and it does feel like every word you put down takes a little weight off your shoulders.

I can see things from both side on this. I can see exactly how someone would feel like a hostage to their own bodies. I would go so far as to say I feel like that some days when I'm bed bound and can't move. I can also see how some people might take the term so literal. I really enjoyed the poem and found it inspiring. I used to write a lot. That unfortunately is something that the fibro took away from me, because I can't focus and concentrate long enough to put more than 2 lines of a poem on paper before I lose my train of thought and can't do any more. Fantastic piece of work indeed.
