Pain Clinic, such a Pain!

Postby Ellen Tracey » Tue Jul 19, 2011 9:01 pm

Well after months of waiting i finally went along to my first ever pain clinic appointment. I arrived to a sign saying "no receptionist" so i sat and waited, two people got sent home due to their nurses not being there  , so i sat chatting to a lovely lady who had been seen and was waiting for her ambulance to take her home.

Anyway i was asked for my letter so they could work out who i would be seeing and then i was called through to see the consultant

Well ive got to say i am more confused now than i was to start with! I sat in silence whilst he read my notes and then he proceeded to press my VERY tender points :yikes: , he then asked me what medication i was taking to which i replied Solpadol and 10 mg of Amitripaline, to which he quicly scribbled "to treat pain and depression"!! I stated that i was suffering pain and not depression and to that he replied " Same thing" I was miffed to say the least.

Anyway he proceeded to say that i have this illness and it WILL get worse and it will not go away! He tore two leaflets off a pad and said "you need those" and wrote me a perscription for Gabapentin 100mg and Robaxin 750 and pointed me in the direction of the hospital pharmancy!

I asked if that was it?? and if i would be attending pain clinic again to which he replied "in 6 months" I thought it was going to be a weekly thing?? I just left as there was noone around when i left his room.

So here i sit wondering what these drugs are all about?? and feeling peed off at the way my appointment went. I have a piece of information that i have to pass to my GP, i think i will have to make an appointment too to see whats going on.

Sorry for long post but ive never had such a bad appontment as today.

aw ellen tracy :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:
they just don't make things easy for us do they

go and see your own GP and see what he has to say about it
i have not been to a pain clinic so really don't know anything about them
but surely there is more to it than that.
you can get all that from your own GP

Sounds like a real nightmare instead of an appt :swear1: :swear1: :swear1:

Gabapentin is often used for FM. The other med is a muscle relaxant, don't know if it's used to help with FM or not :dunno: :dunno:

Going to see your own GP is a good idea, hopefully they'll make a bit more sense and be more understanding than the pain clinic bod

From what has been said on here about pain clinics, I got the impression that it was drs, physios, sometimes psychologists and other people all working together on different ways to treat your pain :yikes: :yikes: which was very definitely not the experience you had

Gabapentin is an epileptic drug but also used for nerve pain and burning pain, a very comman drug for fibro's you start with a small dose working your way up to the stated dose for your condition...

Robaxin is a muscle relaxant used for muscle stiffness & pain, not many fibro's are on this BUT i feel it can benefit you and im actually wondering if it will help my partner as hes in the testin different meds stage still...

Pain clinics offer mediacation & therapies so if you feel these dont help you can always ask your GP for a referal back before the 6months..

To be honest with my experiences theres not much the pain clinic can do these days to what your GP can do, they may be licensed to administrate expensive drugs to what the GP can apart from that if you feel let down by the pain clinic you can work with your GP to find suitable meds/therapies for your symptoms

I am due an appointment a week on Wednesday for pain block injections. :? Had various medications before but I always get a side effect or allergic reaction  Not particularly looking forward to the injections. Had to give up a well paid job but now have to deal with DWP for ESA who say I am fit for work although they are paying me DLA I find the whole thing so confusing. So here goes we will see at the clinic. :fingerscrossed:

Please be very careful of these injections, although they may help many fibro sufferers there are many also that have bad experiences.

We all have to try what is best for us and :fingerscrossed: they help you :goodluck1:

BUT... my partner has been dibilitated by these injections, he put in for them a few years back and the first lot helped him, then after 4months he went for the 2nd lot... they injected twice as much and since then hes been severly ill and has not recovered and that was 18months ago.

He is practicly housebound and screams in agony, not had a nights sleep since and is so depressed hes become suicidal

Its under investigation atm and hes sein various consultant to see what happened.

He has had many trips to A&E where the muscles have reacted and gone into such severe spasms hes had to seek emergancy help.

There is always a risk to any proceedure i just wanted you to be aware... please dont be put off as they may really help you just be careful and make sure you also cared for after :hugs:
