Pain Clinic, such a Pain!

Postby Ellen Tracey » Tue Jul 19, 2011 9:01 pm

Well after months of waiting i finally went along to my first ever pain clinic appointment. I arrived to a sign saying "no receptionist" so i sat and waited, two people got sent home due to their nurses not being there  , so i sat chatting to a lovely lady who had been seen and was waiting for her ambulance to take her home.

Anyway i was asked for my letter so they could work out who i would be seeing and then i was called through to see the consultant

Well ive got to say i am more confused now than i was to start with! I sat in silence whilst he read my notes and then he proceeded to press my VERY tender points :yikes: , he then asked me what medication i was taking to which i replied Solpadol and 10 mg of Amitripaline, to which he quicly scribbled "to treat pain and depression"!! I stated that i was suffering pain and not depression and to that he replied " Same thing" I was miffed to say the least.

Anyway he proceeded to say that i have this illness and it WILL get worse and it will not go away! He tore two leaflets off a pad and said "you need those" and wrote me a perscription for Gabapentin 100mg and Robaxin 750 and pointed me in the direction of the hospital pharmancy!

I asked if that was it?? and if i would be attending pain clinic again to which he replied "in 6 months" I thought it was going to be a weekly thing?? I just left as there was noone around when i left his room.

So here i sit wondering what these drugs are all about?? and feeling peed off at the way my appointment went. I have a piece of information that i have to pass to my GP, i think i will have to make an appointment too to see whats going on.

Sorry for long post but ive never had such a bad appontment as today.

aw ellen tracy :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:
they just don't make things easy for us do they

go and see your own GP and see what he has to say about it
i have not been to a pain clinic so really don't know anything about them
but surely there is more to it than that.
you can get all that from your own GP

Sounds like a real nightmare instead of an appt :swear1: :swear1: :swear1:

Gabapentin is often used for FM. The other med is a muscle relaxant, don't know if it's used to help with FM or not :dunno: :dunno:

Going to see your own GP is a good idea, hopefully they'll make a bit more sense and be more understanding than the pain clinic bod

From what has been said on here about pain clinics, I got the impression that it was drs, physios, sometimes psychologists and other people all working together on different ways to treat your pain :yikes: :yikes: which was very definitely not the experience you had

I am due an appointment a week on Wednesday for pain block injections. :? Had various medications before but I always get a side effect or allergic reaction  Not particularly looking forward to the injections. Had to give up a well paid job but now have to deal with DWP for ESA who say I am fit for work although they are paying me DLA I find the whole thing so confusing. So here goes we will see at the clinic. :fingerscrossed:

What an insensitive bloke! Not a very professional set up! Poor you. Ive just supposedly been to a pain clinic, had six sessions, she seemed to just take copious notes, talked about my recurrent hives and how to keep cool in summer! We didnt even touch on pain, I felt very resentful, I have so many appointments to go to, I wasted my time and lots of my very little energy going to these pointless sessions. Im asking my doc to refer me to a physical health unit, locally, where i think they have group sessions on pain management, occupational therapy. Nhs do a leaflet on it, and should have some in your local clinic/doctors? Ive been on gabapentin and pregabalin, and neither worked for me. So I'm now pinning my hopes on this health unit to help me deal with the pain. Im also starting to see a hypnotherapist who has had good results on fibro,(he's based in brum/stourbridge area) its early days and very expensive, Im lucky that I get sick pay, but will be going down to half pay next month.

i recently went to pain clinic, not much help, the doc there asked me do i fall asleep in the day to which i replied no, he then says that i may have fibro or something else, which i cant remember the name of. I have been diagnosed with fibro by my doctor and rheumy. If they had taken a little bit more notice with me,they would have seen that i had fallen asleep a few time whilst wating to be seen, and also i tend to nod of in the house, but i dont realise that i have done so, because its usually only for a few minutes.
The result of my appiontment was,i will have to attend weekly session for 10weeks, but i have to travel 15 miles to do this.
Havent worked out yet how i am going to achieve this.

I like to shake it, but the fibro does it for me.
