CFS - Maudsley Hospital Ldn, Anyone been?

Postby sarahb » Mon Oct 10, 2011 7:56 pm

Hi

after being diagnosed with FM by the CFS clinic at Barts a few years ago, they recommended counselling and physio which I had, 2 physio sessions (worse than useless of course!) counselling was quite useful. I improved for a year or so, then began going downhill and couldn't seem to do anything to improve. I found this site which has really helped, and it gave me the confidence to ask for a referral to an FM specialist (GP was v unhelpful as "I'd tried everything that Barts recommended). Saw DR Garood at Guys, he works with Prof Davies. After doing a bit of research on here etc I was not surprised when he diagnosed my main problem at the moment as being CFS.

He recommended the Maudsley hospital as being really great for CFS. The referral process is taking forevre, first Dr Garood tried to short circuit the process instead of going via my GP he wrote himself which they rejected, and first I have to be assessed by the community mental health team (my GP thinks that this is to make sure my problem isn't depression and really is CFS)

I saw Garood in May, the mental health people did not want to see me, their argument is that I have no reason to see them as i have no mental health issues which is true! I'm only seeing them tomorrow, October, then who knows how long I will have to wait or their report to get to the Maudsley and then wait on their waiting list....

Has anyone been seen at the CFS service at the Maudsley? was it useful? I'm starting to wonder if it's worth the wait but I think the alternative is Barts who were nice but I'm worried they might just say it's FM again and discharge me with no help or advice again. :penguin:

the psychiatrist I saw was also not sure why he was assessing me other than that my GP had asked him to.

He went through the usual stuff about your life, childhood, work, relationships and then at the end he said that "the label isn't important for the treatment because FM, CFS and depression all have the same treatment" he thinks the problems are down to stress and depression! He said I hadn't even mentioned many physical problems!!!!!! He hardly asked me about any! he asked what it felt like when I first got ill, and if I had ever been admitted to hospital (I had as a child with tonsilitis) so "all the symptoms I described" along with my background means it's depression!

Then he went on to suggest that I was being referred to the Maudsley because it is the UK's main psychiatric hopsital so it is because I need psychiatric assessment that it was recommended, and there would be no point referring as I'd be seeing a psychiatrist not a CFS consultant and I was seeing a psychiatrist (him) now so what would be the point!

Anyway I kicked up a fuss and he might refer me he is going to look into whether there is a consultant in CFS at Maudsley.

I looked at the website and they have a partnership with Guys and they have a CFS dept so I think that is more likely the reason Guys were so keen on them!

I hope it's worth it. I know I'm not depressed I can't face any more mental health workers snooping around looking for indicators of depression so they can tell me I'm depressed :needhug:
