Detrimental medical reports.

Postby oorwullie » Tue Feb 14, 2012 7:09 pm

Hi I am new to the site and hoping some kind soul can help me and offer a bit of advice. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia early in 2011 although I have had the symptoms for a long time. I have recieved my ESA50 form and i want to include extra evidence in the form of medical reports. I have a great report from a neurologist confirming I have Fibromyalgia and detailing the problems I have walking etc. However further down the report it states I probably have an element of Functional Overlay. Having looked this up it appears to suggest either that part of this is in my mind or i'm exaggerating my symptoms which I simply am not. Has anyone else had this term used in any of their medical reports and do you think it could prove detrimental to my claim if I include this report in my evidence to the DWP due to having this term included in it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to contact the neurologist who wrote the report an ask for clarification on the comment, or an explanation as to why that particular comment was used in relation to you??

While I'm at it,  and :welcome: to the forum :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: Lots of info and advice on here, so hopefully you'll get someone post who can help you more than what I can

hi think we all have a eliment of functual overlay , after all thats more or less what fibro is an exageration of sensations of pain and normal body responses ,
its how you feel it im afriad , nothing you can do to change that , but you can change how you react to it which allowes you to be more active and the more active you can be the better you will feel in the end , if we overdo it though we just slip back to were we were so to speak
did you have to stop work or did did work finish you , were all differant but persoal;y im better working than not as long as i pace myself, you have to be at deaths door to get any benifits now , so better to work if you can get something you can do with in your activity range always going to be in pain but it is possibial to ignor it and carry on.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah I had to stop work because of the Fibro, standing and sitting with customers for 8 hours a day was just too much for me to cope with. Even reduced hours didn't help any. I haven't tried contacting the Doctor concerned, i only noticed he had included this in his report after reading it again today. Seems a strange thing to say considering he commented on the falls i had had and the obvious pain i was in during the appointment. :-?

Doctors, consultants, and specialist type peoples do seem to be a law unto themselves at times   Why would thet write a report in clear english that can easily be understood, when you can include a lot of technical~sounding waffle, as well as phrases that make the patient wonder what the heck they're on about

DWP and Atos come under the same being a law unto themselves umbrella, so who knows what they will make of the comment in your letter  :facepalm:Hopefully they'll just read the important stuff and skim over the Functional Overlay comment :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: I think there is something in what Tony has said about us all having an element of it, at times I seriously wonder if what I am feeling and experiencing is real with how it keeps knocking me back so regularly and intensely :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

:goodluck2: :goodluck2: with your ESA claim. Hopefully it will just go straight thru an come out with the right decision for you :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed:

I've tried the ignoring approach at different times Tony, as well as thinking it's not real. There must be another part of my brain circuit that's either short circuiting or is being bypassed, as each time I try to disregard the various sensations, they go up another level. So now there is a little area in my mind that keeps reminding me about what's happening in my body. And so far, so good, I seem to be functioning on a vaguely human level for little bits of the day.
