Physio - Do you have it & does it help you?

Postby Moobaloo » Thu Nov 08, 2012 10:50 pm

Hi all,

My GP referred me to the CFS/ME/Fibro clinic & to a separate physiotherapist as well (although CFS clinic have their own physio, so not sure if I will end up seeing 2 physio's?!).

Had my first 'proper' physio session today (at my very first appointment, we just talked about my aches & pains etc), & was prodded and poked a bit, had my reflexes tested & then given some gentle exercises to do so I don't seize up completely. He also recommended going to walk about in the shallow end of my local swimming pool, but not actually swim. I am SOOO tired, been totally wiped out since I got home from the session!

Just wondering if any other FM sufferers have regular physio sessions & if you find it to be beneficial? I'm only 33 & finding it difficult to keep my weight down due to not being able to exercise like I used to - I used to go to Lindy Hop dance lessons every week & do a couple of sessions of aerobics/weights at home, but now I can't do ANY of that :(

Also, he said that my range of movement was better than he'd thought it would be, but that I don't move fluidly/naturally, my movements are awkward & jerky - yeah, that's cos it hurts! Do you think having this 'better than expected' range of movement will go against me when I claim for ESA?

Going to get some    , any replies & input will be much appreciated!

I'm a physio myself, and traditional physio (in my opinion) is very limited in what it can do with fm.
I've started seeing a physio who specialises in fm/cfs using a combined physio & psychological method of intervention. I've been twice, and am working through some reading & cd's she recommended, and am noticing a positive change in my symptoms. Yes there are good & bad days, but the overall trend has been a small but definite improvement from where I was a month ago.
Maybe this is just a more positive attitude to the fm, time will tell.
Fingers crossed (when they're not too sore, that is...)

i have been refered to physio twice then referred onto hydrotherapy.

couldn't manage phsyio as couldn't manage to balance very well.

really enjoyed hydro and helped to loosen my back muscles up for a bit.

did some walks round pool and some exercises to help and stretch my back nice in the warm water.

Thanks for the replies :)

I was certainly worn out after yesterday...I slept (on and off, as we do) until gone 1pm today.
Maybe I need to try and get to see the physio at the CFS/Fibro clinic then, as it seems a fibro-focussed physio would probably be of more benefit. The physio I am seeing now is very nice and is sympathetic to fibro pain...he said he wanted to give me a full assessment to make sure I didn't have any pain that was caused by something else, but being put down to a fibro symptom.

I guess only time will tell!

What a very good physio checking to see if it was something other than Fibro. :-D

Just before my Dx I was sent for physio because of my back pain. I had 2 out of the 6 sessions and all she kept doing was making me stretch and when I couldn't do what she wanted she ended up telling me "you have an awful lot of pain for your actual injury " like I was a faking it or something. Now given my DX with FM I know why. :yikes:

Give the above I'm not a great believer in physios but do realise that we need to try and get some exercise . I have started on my own going to the local gym and trying to walk in the pool, probably not as good as hydrotherapy as the pool isn't as warm as I would like and I'm sure the people at the hydrotherapy pool would suggest some FM friendly exercises.

Good luck and hope you get lots out of your sessions and meet new folk!

Hey
I saw physio after i have a car crash over 2 years ago, it didnt do anything and just hurt, then did a pain management course, which was a waste of time too, now i have been diagnosed as having fibro i have been referred back to physio. I used to do aqua, swimming and gym but cant now as get too tired and ill. So saw physio, and was proded n poked like you was and given a couple of exercises nothing much, but given booklets on pacing, relaxation and sleeping, as she said i need to concentrate on them. Seein her again soon, not sure what she will do, as was in so much pain just from being touched last time, i dont think i could take it again. But wil go and see her and see what she says. Im going to ask about hydro just not sure we have one local. Hope it works for me x
