what do i do??!!

Postby animeemo3 » Mon May 20, 2013 1:51 am

hi everyone again! just a question to put out there...
kinda need to list meds before i ask (it will relate)
i take 2x 8/500 cocodamol together with 30mg of codeine phosphate at a time, about twice a day. 50mg amitryptiline at night and omeprazole daily and nothing else, no herbal tabs.
are these actually any good? i've been taking them for so long, i have an actual addiction to them, which becomes very apparent when i don't take them. but i don't get any kind of relief from them. is that because i am too used to them? or it it actually not high enough? i'm very confused when i see others say what meds they are on, and cocodamol and codeine are rarely in use by others, if you see what i mean.
i have tried explaining this to my gp before and all he did was up my amit by 10mg, very reluctant to change anything else. :nono:

heres my question: should i just ask for specific medication(s) outright? what ones should i say? would it even work?

i'm at my wits end here, taking meds i know don't work but affect me terribly when i don't take them so i have no choice, pain through the roof and with no support from gp

Hi

If you have been on these pain medications for a long time then you are more than likely used to the dose especially if they are not touching the pain you are in. I would advise you to go back to your gp and be totally honest with him about your meds. It could be worth you asking for a referral to the pain clinic, i was referred to them a few years ago and it was one of the best moves i made. The good thing about the pain clinic is it is run by anaethatists and they are not afraid to use powerful drugs or a combination of drugs to get your pain under control. They can also help with injections into the area's that are causing you a lot of problems which in some people really does make a difference. GP's are so causious about pain killers and what dose to prescribe but now my gp is guided by what the pain clinic suggests and now my pain is much better controlled.

Codeine is a very addictive especially long term/high doses.

I would advise you to see your GP as it looks like you may need to be weaned off the codeine and another pain killer put in its place if you feel your addicted to them.

You can normaly have 8/500 co-codamol x 2 up to 4 x daily OR you can have 30/500 co-codamol x 2 up to 4 x daily this what i am given BUT always go on the advice of your GP and what he perscribes.

Codiene does come on its own the 30mg but i have been given the co-codamal for added pain relief as it has paracetamol with it.

Hi I take 8/500mg co-codamol x2 up to 4 times a day or 15/500 co-codamol neither give great relief to me either. I also take Ibuprofen 200mg x 2 at times they work better for me with pain relief and the doctor gives me oral diazepam for muscle spasms which actually makes me very sleepy, i also use ibroprofen maximum strength gel but not when taking the ibuprofen tablets.
My latest is Voltorol cream whihc I find very good and take with my c0-codamol tablets thats not too bad.
I also take an anti depressant cipramil but that is because as well as fibromyalgia I have anxiety and depression I also have osteo arthritis of the spine.
I know what you mean, pain pain and pain!, you sort of get used to it in the end, its so wearing.
My doctor is reluctant to cchange me over to amitriptline as I already take a anti depressant which has my depression and anxiety at its most stabble.
I also use a TENS machine, hot water bottle and frozen peas in a cloth for pain relief, warm water from a shower directed on the painful site or a warm bath.
I tried co codamol 30/500mg but it made me sick so gave up with that one!

Hi I take Gabapentin which no one else mentioned so thought I would. I now take 2100mg a day of that but it takes weeks to have effect. I also take Tramadol which is a pain med. I take up to 400mg a day if having a bad day. I also have Oramorph for really bad days. I had severe SPD during my last pregnancy and was on high levels of slow release morphine tablets (80mg daily of MST) My doctors have always taken this into account and give me higher levels of pain medication. I also take Citalopram which is an anti anxiety to try to reduce my stress levels. I've been told there is no point in taking anti inflamatorys (cant spell sorry) as there is no swelling just pain points. If they are working for you though its great.

I hope some of that helps, good luck :-D :-D

Maybe you need to consider finding a new GP who will be more open to FM and the treatments that can be used to try and manage it. You could try contacting other surgeries in your area if there isn't a suitable GP at your current one and see if they have any patients registered that have FM or CFS/ME or other chronic pain problems and/or as if there is a GP who specialises in or has an interest in these sorts of conditions.

Alternatively you could try changing the way you approach your appts with your GP. Sometimes taking a more direct approach can make a difference. Explaining that you have been looking into different things that can help FM and are wondering if a specific med/treatment would be suitable for you to try could lead to things moving in a better direction for you.

HI perhaps my previous post wasnt very clear sorry if that was the case.
I take ibuprofen because i also have osteo arthritis of the spine which causes inflamation only take that when it flare us very bad aswell as the fibromyalgia.
co-codamol ive always taken for bad headaches 8/500mg and also take them more fibro pain and at other times 15/500mg when 8/500mg doesnt seen to help.
I use the ibuprofen gel max strength on the osteo arthritis spine pain and just started trying the Voltorol cream (very good) for arthritis pain better I think than the ibuprofen gel. but you cant use it continous for more than 14 days.

Cipramil is the liquid form of citalopram as I have a phobia of taking tablets (swallowing them) so all my meds are liquid or dissolvable.
my doctor does argu with me everytime a repeat goes in for my meds as he thinks i should just swallow them and get on with it!,
Yes i know it sounds simple and easy but thats fine if dont you have a long anxiety attack just thinking about it. Hes rather a stern old thing! LOL. mind you there is times i just dont need the argument especially a month ago when he refused the prescrition and i had to wait a few days to get an appointment to see him and argu about the tablet/liquid situation. he always tells me how much more expensive the liquid form is and therefore costs the nhs far too much money. I did get cross and ask him if was his personal money. to which he did not reply just gave me a stern look!
I am moving home soon, leaving the three bed family home for which i am very sad to do, and moving to a two bedroom bungalow with a flush floor shower and other adaptations as I cannot manage the stairs very well in our current home any more and bathing is a joke, not to mention visiting the wc. LOL!
Its a good job ive learnt to laugh otherwise I would cry a river........
I hope the move is going to be the right thing for me. I know the adaptations makes sense and will giv eme better independance but i am so settled her. The bedroom tax is what is doing all this and im furious!!! :-x

Medications are a personal thing, not in the way of we shouldn't discuss them but rather that we all need something different.
I take something that very few people do. I have tried an awful lot of meds over 23 years.
As it was suggested by others, see your GP. Tell him how you feel and request to be referred to a pain clinic. The Dr's there are the ones in my mind that know and understand everyone's pain. No two of us are alike in pain. Our tolerance levels are all different. Just because someone takes a stronger medication does not mean they are in more pain than you, it just means their tolerance level is different and/or they react differently to a drug.
Do not go in and tell your Dr what to give you. We the patient do not know how meds work together or what will work for your condition. Especially do not go in and say I think/want this drug at this dose. You will be looked at having searched for the strongest drug and want a fix. We know that is not the case but a friend who is a pain Dr says that is how it looks to the Dr. and I see their point

Talk to your GP about all treatments available besides drugs.....good luck

Expect the worst in life you won't be disapointed and you'll be prepared!
