New tests

Postby seren921 » Tue May 04, 2010 1:59 pm

hi just wanted to ask you all have you herd about the new tests the doc/hospital can do, i havent been to see the specialist yet am still waiting but a friend of mine has
he has told her they can now scan your brain MRI and tell from that if you have FM, he also said that they are trying to get all so called FM
sufferers to have this scan in the next 5 yrs and he said they are expecting at least 50- 70% of sufferers not having this illness, not sure now if i want to go and see him i thought he was a fm specialist so i thought i might of got somewhere with him as all other docs (apart from 1) are saying is they dont think i have it.
each time i go im told i have something different,, if i wrote everything down on medical forms that im ment to have id have to add my own paper lol, sciatica, ostioartheritis, speondiloises(sorry on spelling) trapped nerves, then i havent got trapped nerves i have damaged nerves so i am now waiting to see 3 different specialist and they will all prob tell me i have something else, and since i was told i have damage to c6 and c7 in my neck nobody has mentioned it since, just told to exercise it and sleep on a neck pillow and goodbye we dont need to see you again  i dont think that is an answer i just want to b able to go back to work if i can
ps they have now put me on the medication amatriptyline which just totally knocks me out all day the next day, some days i dont get up till 3pm if i have taken them, a bomb cud go off and i wouldnt wake so if i have anything to do the next day i cannot take them anyway :banghead:

Hi
I have not heard anything about the tests.

I had a brain scan done early last year for migraines, they knew i had fibro at the time but nothing was mentioned to me about new tests then so not sure, do you know where your friend heard/read about it?

I take 75ml a night of ami`s, really wish they would knock me out for the night. lol.

He was probably talking about the functional MRI. This type of scan would be able to differentiate people with central hyperalgesia ( a core part of Fibro) from those with "just" widespread pain and other symptoms. However, fMRI is only available in a few research centres so we are a long way off it being available for every Fibro diagnosis.

He might have been talking about a dynamic or flex MRI (less likely). This where they do an MRI with your neck straight and then with your head tilted back. It's a normal MRI machine but it has to be taken apart and reconfigured and is not available yet in this country as far as I know. Dr Holman in Seattle is doing a lot of work with this - he's found that many Fibromites have issues with positional cervical cord compression (PC3). However, the management of this is usually PT and you don't have to have the PC3 to benefit from the specific PT.
I run FibroAction, a small national charity raising awareness of Fibromyalgia Syndrome. I am not a qualified healthcare professional. If you would like medical references for any facts quoted, just PM me.

I'm currently under neurologist and have just had MRI scan (more to eliminate M.S. than anything). He told me that in my case the fibro was possibly hereditary - there is evidence of "faulty" gene which is a famillial problem; but definitely said fibro was best diagnosed from a paper chase of your medical history, so I'm sure he would have mentioned if there was any test that could be done to prove fibro. I am seeing him again in June and will mention this to him though and will keep you posted. Good luck with your meds - I do know what you mean, its a vicious circle isn't it.
