made to feel s******* by GP

Postby Elsbeth » Wed Apr 06, 2011 7:39 pm

I finally decided to go to the doc today about the pains caused by my Athritis.

I will admit I have been in the surgery a few times over the last month or 2 but that was due to my panic attacks and change of meds which are now all under control but I really don't go unless I have to.

So, anyway the last few weeksI have been having real issues with pain in my back and hips.
bit of history, I have severe Osteoarthritis, to the point that I have holes in my bones, a twisted spine and Degenerative Disc Disease and part of my coxcyx (sp) has worn away.

I mentioned this to my GP last time I was in and he told me to go back and see him once my FM pain had settled down and I knew it was deffo the OA and he would refer me to the Orthopedic team at the hospital.
I have been taking some serious pain relief for the last 2 weeks just to be able to get up. I've needed my walking sticks and my wheelchair.
So was in with him today and he renewed all my medication for me and then proceeded to tell me that all my pain was in my head. I kind of looked at him and asked what he meant. He said that I should be responding to the pain killers, he didn't really think I was being honest about the severity of the damage despite my having seen the images and being told exactly what each mark was on the x-rays. He said I needed physio and the back clinic..NOPE. My Rheumi consultant wouldn't send me as I am unable to even lift a full carrier bag without it hurting and am unable to lay on a floor without pain. I went to back clinic once and ended up an in-patient.

He started going on about how there was no point in refering me as they wouldn't do any surgery and they should be able to control the pain without refering me. I tried to explain that I saw the Ortho team when I was pregnant with Grace and he said he could feel the damage and would prob see me as soon as 6 months after having her. 3 years on and I am only just asking to go now. I think I have done well.

So now he has me doubting my pain. I am without a doubt in stupid amounts. I can't get to my own feet to put my socks and shoes on, I limp all the time and now need my stick indoors.
He has upped my meds as well.
I am now on

Oramorph 10mg 4 times daily
10mg Zomorph 2 times daily
75 mg Pregablin 3 times daily
and and anti-inflamatory..(can't recall name but it isn't Diclofenic)

I rattle I swear.
He has just made me feel so much like I am wasting their time but I can't deal with the pain for much longer...grrr

sorry, just a short note as i am feeling terrible again......your gp sounds like a :swear1: idiot. i looked at your list of meds and it's not actually alot. as you are still in pain surely you can take something else as well to give you some relief.

i have been waiting for a promised follow up appointment with my neurologist. i eventually got fed up of waiting and emailed his secretary. she has emailed me back and an appointment letter is in the post. i think this method only works with specialists you have previously seen. you could always email your rheummy's secretary and when you see him tell him he must refer you to the orthopods.

good luck and best wishes adele :blowkiss:

He sounds like a right :swear1:

So basically he's decided as the treatment he's giving you isn't cutting it it means you're imagining your problems. because he's so wonderful and if what he says should work doesn't it means you're imagining things. I hate Drs like that.

:hugs:

I really hope you feel better soon, I'd try and seek a second opinion.

Oh Elsbeth , im so sorry to hear of this.

The Dr sounds like a right ejit.

And how, if he thinks its all in your head, would he renew your medication?.

He sounds like he was just trying to get you out of there as soo as he could. Is there another Dr you could go and see at the practice?

Your pain ISN'T all in your head honey, there are enough people on here who would be able to show him how real it is!

Gentle hugs

See a different doctor and keep seeing different ones until u find someone who will listen and help you.

Whilst the drugs you are on are very strong opiates you are on the lowest dose. How much Oramorph do u get given a month? I get 300ml a month so (naughty i know) when my pain was severe i would take 10-15ml(20-30mg), instead of the 5ml dose, as i knew it was safe as have administered a lot stronger at work(max dose is something like 100mg). BUT u must tell the doc u have done this and do prepare for an ear bashing from the majority. I was lucky and the doc i saw agreed with me when i told him i had increased my own dose and added it to my notes.

Ideally the best thing for u to do is find a doc that will listen and they will increase the Zomorph to a stronger dose so u wont need the Oramorph for breakthrough pain. To help the doctors listen and believe you write a pain/symptom diary. Write down where the pain is, how it feels(stabbing, burning, dull, aches, shooting, cramping ect) and rate it at a score out of 10 with 1 being a dull pain and 10 being the worst pain imaginable that would leave u screaming, being sick and rushing to a and e. Also note what eases the pain ie pain relief, rest, sleep, hot water bottle, hot bath or anything else that u use. Lastly write how it affects your life and what it prevents you doing. I used to do mine daily, which i would advise for you and re-visit the doctor in a week or 2. Now i only do my diary when i have appointments as i got sick of writing the same things daily lol!!! My GP actually used it to refer me to rhuemy and they used it to help with diagnosis.

I also meant to add(but foggy brain made me forget lol) that when u take ur pks always take full daily dose of paracetamol(2x500mg four times a day) as it helps with the absorbtion of opiates and can help reduce side effects too.

Also look into other therapies....i LOVE my tens machine and heat pad and have plenty of hot baths too x

I get 300mg every couple of weeks as I am on 10mg 4 times a day atm of Oramorph.

They have to go steady with me as I tend to sleep for days if they give me too much of stuff. Like taking paracetamol with morphine I can't do as that makes me too sleepy.
