referral to Prof Davies/Guys Rheumatology

Postby sarahb » Fri May 27, 2011 9:28 pm

Hi,

A few months ago I convinced my doctor to refer me to Prof John E Davies at Guys, as I have never seen a fibro specialist. I was originally seen by an ME/CFS consultant who diagnosed FM and his suggestions for treatment were minimal, so I thought I should see an actual expert for advice!

I just received my appointment and the doctor I am due to see is Dr T Garrood. Has anyone else any experience of this doctor/does anyone know whether he specializes in Fibro?

I'm aware that if you see any Rheumatologist they may not specialize in FM and it's basically impossible to get swapped over between the Rheumatologists at Guys I have been told by someone who was in exactly that position.

I did hear that Prof Davies has another colleague who is starting to specialize in Fibro but don't know who it is! and of course will have to wait until Tues before I can ring the hospital now.

Any info appreciated! :dunno:

As its an NHS clinic Dr Garood may be a registrar who works for Prof Davies. Quite often the registrars see patients in an NHS clinic. Prof Davies also runs a private clinic in London - I saw him a few weeks ago where he diagnosed fibromyalgia. He gave me injections of local anaesthetic in trigger points in my shoulders and started me on acupan for pain and clonazepam to sleep. I didn't find the clonazepam worked at all but the acupan is good for about four hours. Hope this helps

thanks - it does say "under the care of" Dr T Garrood which is why I am spooked! I've waited so long for this letter!

Oh, if it says 'under the care of ' then Dr Garood will be a consultant. He must be a rheumatologist working with Prof Davies.

Hello Sarahb,
I did the same as you and pursuaded my GP to do a referral to Prof Davies as I was diagnosed five years ago and have had no support from consultants since. I got my letter a month ago to find it was to see and 'under the care of' Dr Garrood. Not sure whether I'm seeing a specialist in Fibro or just a rheumatologist. My appointments next month so will wait and see.
I hope that it was helpful for you if you've been already? If you haven't yet good luck!

I saw Prof Davies yesterday - am or was on annual review with him there - but no further appointments are being made with him - I wonder if he is retiring from NHS and/or concentrating on his private practice.
