How do you know......

Postby trish1999 » Tue Jul 19, 2011 3:35 pm

I have been treated for arthritis for the last 4 years and MRI's have shown that yes I do have degeneration in my vertebrae. I@ had 2 discs removed in my neck because of crushing to the spinal chord and other nerves. I am also on medication for restless legs Ropinorole. When talking to my doctor today she mentioned fibromyalgia and because I didn't know what it was looked it up when I got home. I seem to fit with many of the symptoms fatigue, pain poor sleeping etc so how do you go about getting a diagnosis

HI

Welcome to the site :welcome:
I was diagnosed by my gp initialy and then I asked to be refered to a rhumy, but I only had 1 visit to him, he gave me a check over took bloods and said yes your gp is right.
so if your gp is happy to say yes you have it then thats all you need to confirm you have it.
so again welcome to the site and the  world of fm

Hiya,

I'm on Ropinirole for Restless Legs too and also Gabapentin. I've had an MRI scann too and have 'wear and tear' in my spine and hips. I ache like mad and my doctor mentioned Fibromyalgia and I agreed with him  cos I'd read about it and am sure I have it. I'm seeing a rheumatologist next month.

:welcome: to the forum trish

I've moved you post into "Where To Say Hello" as it seemed a better board for your first posting.

How do we know......well, in a lot of cases people don't know that they have FM until they are told about it by the doc/rheumy who has given them their dx. And quite often they do a poor job of explaining what it is, how it could affect the patient and what types of treatment are available to try and manage it

The actual dx is usually arrived at after blood tests and anything else the dr feels necessary has been carried out to see if anything else could be causing the pain and other symptoms, as there are other conditions which have similar symptoms to FM. If nothing else shows up, then you can either be referred on to an appropriate specialist who will dx/confirm the dx after looking at case history, test results and doing anything they think could help find the cause of the symptoms, or your GP may make the dx themselves and start you on a treatment plan.

With you saying your GP mentioned FM, it might be worth going back to see them again to talk thru it more and see what they have to say about a definite dx for you :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed:

Thanx all :flowers:
I think i will go back to see my gp. I've had lots of blood tests in the past is there anything specific they look for or is it just a matter of ruling other things out ass rheumatoid arthritis has already been ruled out. I have also suffered from depression for many ears and lost my job through ill health

It's a case of ruling other things out trish. When all other possibilities have been discounted, that's when FM is usually given as the diagnosis.
