Hello from Bristol - medication and London support info pls!

Just thought I'd say hi :) I'm 29 and do medical admin support. My GP diagnosed me with fibro late last year after friends with it said my symptoms sounded like theirs, I brought it up, and he agreed. My mum has ME as well though we both seem to be managing so far (out of sheer bloodymindedness more than anything else). I'm in the process of going through the Pain Clinic but as ever they seem more interested in the longstanding depression than anything physical, ignoring the fact that a big part of the reason I'm depressed is because I'm constantly in pain ¬_¬ They're stunned I'm managing to work 4 days a week but it's either that or get harassed by the government for being a scrounger (do not get me started) and/or living on sod all money and dealing with incompetently run medical assessments.

I'm wondering about a couple of things:

I'm considering moving (back) to London, and wondered how people cope with living there as the pace of life and the prices are crazy, and I know working more than 4 days a week would be too much for me, but there are very few job prospects for me in my local area and I'm closer to friends. Does anyone know what support is available, if any? Besides Occupational Health at whatever job I get. I wouldn't be moving until things are sorted regarding a diagnosis but it's nice to know what my options are. I'd be living in the Manor House/Finsbury Park/Archway/Holloway Road area if I did move.

I'm also curious about amitryptiline vs. Nortriptyline. It's going to be the next thing I speak to my GP about as I've been taking amis for around 4/5 months now and the weight gain - while it takes the edge of the pain I can gain half a stone in a couple of days if I take it consistently, despite making an effort to alter my diet and exercise, and even when I was taking it constantly it felt like I was building up a tolerance to it. Is that possible? The drowsiness is pretty bad too, I took two 10mg last night and still feel like I could fall asleep now at 2pm and so I don't really want to increase my dose as I can't afford to lose my job :| (On the plus side, if I take Amis and Kalms I can knock myself out for twelve hours as and when the insomnia kicks in and I'm not at work \o/). I'm finding myself taking smaller doses or not taking it at all before I go out socially so I don't feel so horrible, but of course the pain comes back, and if I've got to that stage this early on I should really be looking at taking something else.

Does Nortriptyline make you gain weight so quickly as well? I realise it's all relative but some experiences of it would be good as I've heard the side effects aren't quite as strong.

My GP has also put me on a low dose of citalopram but I took it before years ago and it did nothing for me, to the extent I had no side effects when I went cold turkey.

Please let me know if I'm better off posting these questions somewhere else.

Thanks :)

Nothing on the advice front about London from me I'm afraid, only ever being a visitor there and not a resident. Have you thought about looking to see if there are any support groups in the areas you've mentioned??? If there are, they may be able to help you with what is available in and around where you could be.

I'm on nortriptyline after finding some of the ami side effects too annoying. Not sure about the weight gain aspect, as I seemed to put more on when I was being treated for what turned out to be the wrong condition than what I have since having the FM dx. As for the noris themselves, I've found them much more effective than the amis were, I've been on the same dosage (60mg each night) for about 1 months and it still seems to be helping me most of the time. I don't have anything like the zombiness each morning that the amis gave me, and the main problem I had ami~wise, constant dry mouth, really eased off for a while (it came back again when I started having problems with what turned out to be diabetes)

The only way you'll know if they are right for you tho is to give them a try and see how you go with them. Like amis, they can take about a month to get into your system properly.

If your dog doesn't like someone, then you probably shouldn't either
