Hi

I'm Laura, I'm 26, a single mum to my gorgeous 2 year old son and I live in the Gloucestershire area.

I was, finally, given a diagnosis about a year ago. I've struggled with what I was told were 'growing pains', migraines, headaches, general nausea, dizziness, balance problems, ibs, exhaustion, insomnia, pins and needles, sensitivity to pain etc etc, the list could continue a while, since I was very young, but it was always managable and the parts that I saw the dr for were always explained away by something else (and many of the things I started to just accept as normal, over the years)

Once I had my son, it was like I'd been hit by a bus. The aches I'd get in my hips when I did my two mile a day walk suddenly became almost constant, and all the time. The headaches were almost daily. Backpain constant. Migraines, hand pain everything was just constant and much much worse. The first gp I saw after my baby was born told me, despite it being in my notes that my pains were being investigated, thati t was normal after having a baby and to take some paracetamol. Needless to say I've not seen him again.

GP sent me off to a rheumy who found I don't have arthritis but diagnosed the fibro. I was then sent off to a hand specialist because I'd gone to the dr about hand pain, initially, because it was before I had my son and my hand pain was the worst and most obvious (as I said, the other day to day pains I'd convinced myself were normal) - So even though I explained that my pain was now everywhere, and worse even in the places I'd had it before, they stayed obsessed with the hand stuff and sent me to see an occupational therapist who specialised in hands and wrists. As to be expected she could provide me with no help. All she did was tell me to do my best to alter my life to make as little pain as possible (Well duuuh)

Was then sent on to see an occupational therapist who got me on to a 'mindfulness course' and also sent me back to gp for pain relief.

Gp gave me cocodamol which just sent me spacy and didn't help pain. Then put me on tramadol, which helped but not enough. So now am on tramadol and dihydrocodeine but keep suffering with constipation so badly that I've almost ended up in a+e so am back to the gp soon. To be honest, even that level of pain relief was only takign the edge off the pain, it was never gone.

I had to quit the mindfulness course after the first session as my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer.

I think I'll stop typing now as I'm sure most people won't have got through this. So yes, this is me. 26, single mum and in almost constant pain with little to no support from the medical peoples. I have been working myself to the bone trying to help my mum since her surgery and am totally worn out. I've been diagnosed with depression since I was 11, and at the moment I'm still at the depressed stage with the fibro, though sometimes denial and anger too. I almost hate myself, some days, for not being able to do the thins I need to do. And most days I just have to force myself to do them regardless of the pain - I have my son and he Always comes first. Most nights are spent like this, exhausted, in agony but can't sleep from insomnia and pain

Hi Laura :welcome: to the forum

Sorry to hear about your mum. :hugs:

With your depression have you spoken to your Gp about it? there are many fibro sufferers who have depression, its not surprising with the pain we are in and how life changing it can be, explain this to your Gp and they can help you, you dont have to suffer. :hugs:

You could ask your Gp to swop your pain meds over but you will find that some do cause you constipation  i take lactulose which help. Here is a link for other meds used to treat fibro, you could print it out and go through it with your Gp, you might find another better suited for you.

:welcome: to the forum laurafae :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing:

I'm sorry to hear what you've been going thru, I hope your mum's treatment is going in the right direction for you, her and the everyone else involved in all your lives :blowkiss: :blowkiss:

There is a lot of info and advice on here that you may find useful, so have a look round and see what there is.

Constipation is unfortunately quite a common side effect of some of the meds we take. As Shaz has already said, there are things that can help with this, either on prescription or over the counter.

Anything you want to know about, all you need to do is ask and we'll try to help you with it :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing:

hi Laura, it's lovely to have someone else from glos on here. welcome
i have found treatment options to be limited in the county and found the pain clinic at glos royal and chelt general to be particularly unhelpful. i have had great help from an OT from social services and highly recommend bath rheumatology hospital for treatment.
best wishes, Adele xxx

Hi everyone and thank you for your welcoming replies - It really has made me feel much better about posting

I am really hoping that the gp and I can find something else that works. I have been taking lactulose, and for the first couple of weeks I was calling it magic poo medicine (Yep, that's my way to make light of the slightly too much info topic, heh) but it's stopped really working, now, and the other day I was worried I might end up in a+e as it was the worst it had been =(

It's very interesting to know that others have found a similar lack of support in this area, Adele, it's a big shame but I am glad that I'm not just imagining it. I've been at the Cheltenham general, the staff really are lovely and it feels like they're doing their best, just that there is so very little that they can offer.

I am on duloxetine for the depression and fibro together, and in general it helps a lot, but I find that no amount of meds will help in certain situations. It's probably a good thing that I refused treatment from the age of 12 until about 21 as it's helped me learn how to cope without the effect of meds. (I refused meds as I was put on the, now, renowned Seroxat which absolutely destroyed me - I was only 11)

I would very much like to sit down and talk meds with my gp but I'm not sure it would work too well. He's the only gp that's any good at my surgery, and he's the one who's helped me throughout the process, to date, but part of why I like him is his abruptness. He doesn't get all annoying and 'awwwwww aahh awwwwww' he just gets the job done. But, in the same breath, it does mean that if I try to discuss meds with him he pretty much just goes with the first thing I say I've heard of. Even if it happens to be strong enough to knock out an ox he'll go 'This is quite potent you know' - I'd rather we could actually discuss it. Tramadol does help, but I'm still in a lot of pain, but I just can#t face the constipation from the dihydrocodeine anymore =( - I was stll in a lot of pain even with the mixture of those too, but it really was the best combo I've tried, to date, and it did make my day to day life managable, even if still very difficult. My aim is just to be able to function as best as I can - My boy needs me and I have no choice to stay in bed on a bad day REALLY wish I could hehe

If you don't mind me asking, where in the area are you from Adele?

Thank you, again, everyone xxx
