Hello from possible sufferer?

Postby sharie » Mon Jul 02, 2012 1:04 pm

Hi,
I've been looking on this forum for a few weeks now. I'm wondering what members might think of my story; I've read a few stories of members on here trying to get a diagnosis and lets say its ringing a few bells with my own story.

I've not been diagnosed with FM and am banging my head against the medical profession for the past 12 months as to what is wrong with me. I do have a thyroid problem that crops up every few years - take a few tablets and it goes.

Bout 12 months ago I thought I had it again, migranes, headaches, dizzyness, black outs, feeling exhausted for no reason but this time it was accompanied by terrible pains in my joints (legs, ankles and arms shouders). I got brain fog, couldn't think straight, shook like a leaf at times and heart palpatations. I have an innocent heart murmer btw.

Went to the doctors a number of times to be told it was 'stress'. Had blood tests (all negative) and told I was 'run down'. Took my husband in with me on the next visit and he backed me up - I was refered to a cardiologist who told me everything was fine and said I needed to see my endocrinologist (thyroid specialist)again. This is a guy I can't stand as he can be really irritating in his remarks  .
Hoping that is was thryoid again I went to see him. He was exceedingly patronising stating that all my tests were negative and insinuating that I was an attention seeker!!

He even brought up my past medical history over the previous 5 years and used that as evidence to back up his claim. I had food poisong about 4 years ago and afterwards kept having severe stomach cramps, my own gp suggested it was an appendicitus wrote a letter and sent me directly to A&E - tests showed it was clear and follow up colonoscopy showed it was clear and told it was IBS. My consultant sneered and said I'd been checked out for ovarian cancer at the same time (as if i was a hypochondriac) and I replied that the hospital had told me to have this done as I'd just lost my mum to this hereditary form of cancer and both my grand mothers died of it.
Because I got upset at this stage he brought up the word depression. I replied I'm bound to be depressed as the medical profession weren't taking my ill health seriously and I was sick of the lot of them.

Upshot was he sent me for more tests and I visited my doc for anti depressants.I also asked my GP about FM (an internet friend has it but I'd never thought about it until she put the idea forward to me one day) . GP was surprised I'd come up with it but agreed that it was a very likely possibility.

I went back to my consultant who sneeringly told me all my tests were 'normal'. I asked him about FM and he agreed that it could be but said I need to see a Rheumatologist for diagnosis and to go back to my GP for a referral.
Back at the GP the lady doctor said to me 'You know there is no cure for FM so why do you want a diagnosis?'

Upshot is I'm to go to a consultant in a weeks time.

I really just want to know what I have, surely thats not too much to ask?

Hi and :welcome: to the forum  no it is not too much to ask for and :fingerscrossed: you get some answers when you go for your appointment.

You will appreciate that no-one on here can say you do or do not have FM as none of us as far as I am aware is in a position to do so.

Keep looking around and posting and if we are able to we will try to answer any/all questions you may have, lets know how you get on :hugs:

:welcome: to the forum sharie :grouphug: :grouphug:

Sorry to hear what you've been going thru to try and get a dx for your problems. Sadly, for something like FM, it can take a log time as it has overlapping symptoms with several other conditions, and is also very good at mimicking other problems, and it's only when these other possibilities have been investigated and discounted that a dx for something like FM is given.

As Denys has already said, we can't say whether you have FM or not, for that you need a suitably qualified medical professional. What we can try to do tho is offer you advice and support, and try to help you with any questions you may have.

Between now and your appt with the consultant, have a look around and see what there is on here, as there is a lot of info on a wide range of subjects that you may find useful. If you'd like to keep us updated, it would be nice to hear how you go on :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing:

Almost forgot, I've made some of the paragraphs clearer in your post as quite a number of us on here find looking at what seems to be a huge block of text difficult to read thru

Thanks for the replies everyone. :-D I'm not looking for diagnosis from anyone on the site but reading through some of the members experiences/symptoms struck a chord with me. I've found the site all very interesting so far and will read more.
My GP btw told me to check out some of the forums on the net as she said they'd be useful.

I know you're not looking for someone here to say whether what you have is FM or not. We add this bit in these days because of past instances where someone has asked if what they are describing is FM and someone has replied say that it is FM, only for the OP to find out from a Dr or consultant/specialist that it is something completely different to FM.

It's one of those things that has been marred for others by a numpty thinking that everyone with the same sort of symptoms must all have the same problem

Not sure where to post this so thought I'd add here...

Saw the rheumatologist yesterday, and although I don't have all the pressure points she thinks that I have fibromyalgia. :( She asked me what sparked it all off??
I have one more test (adrenal gland) and if that is negative I get the firbromyalgia diagnosis. Not sure if I am happy or sad - glad that I have a diagnosis but not so happy that its a condition and that a course of tablets isn't a quick fix.
