I might have FM

Postby Elliot Brand » Thu Jan 10, 2013 8:32 pm

Hello , I'm new here ,

Since the summer I have been feeling unwell. It started with back pain ( which has been coming on a while) . Then IBS-like symptoms ( again I had been heading that way for while). My other symptoms have been Globus-sensation , burning down both sides of the body , chest pain , panic attacks , severe anxiety , depression , legs feeling really heavy in bed , tinnitus , dizzyness and generally feeling unwell.
The GP's were sick of seeing me and to be honest have treated me like it was all in my head. I got sent to a physio for my back and he has done some tests ( pressing on certain parts of the body ). He said he can't diagnose FM , but he would 'bet his house' that I have it. He has now written to my GP suggesting I be referred to a pain clinic.

I just hope the GP listens and doesn't try to fob me off with 'you've got health anxiety' again.

Hi Elliott,
First of all hello!
Sorry to her you have not been well and that you think it might be fibromyalgia. It may be worth checking out if you have a specialist in your area. I saw a consultant rheumatologist in October who gave me the diagnosis and he was a specialist in FMS and CFS/ME. My GP referred me to him at my request although I ended up seeing him privately as I don't live in he UK and so was short of time. I found out about him through googling on the Internet!
I hope you find a diagnosis soon and good luck with your GP!
Regards,
Fiona.

:welcome: to the forum Elliott   I've moved you into here as it's more suitable with this being your intro post.

Sounds like you were seen by a decent physio, not all of them are familiar with FM. Hopefully your GP will act on his suggestions and things can will start heading towards you finding out the reasons for your various symptoms and problems. When you go and see your GP, to help support what your physio has said you could take some info with you about FM and some details about your symptoms and how they fit in with the condition. This linky might help as your GP can't dispute that the source of the info isn't a reliable one http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Fibromyalg ... tment.aspx

There's lots of info and advice across the boards, so have a look and a read as you find your way around, there may be some suggestions that you find helpful.

Anything that you're wondering about or want to know, just ask and we'll try to help you with them

My old GP actually told me outright it was all in my head, even though I had already been diagnosed by a consultant rheumatologist after several years of symptoms. I tried the other GPs in the surgery and got nowhere so I changed surgeries. Don't forget you have every right to do that & its actually really easy. I didn't have to discuss it with anyone at the old surgery at all. All I had to do was call into the new surgery and tell them I wanted to switch. They set me up a registration appointment and arranged for my medical notes to b transferred. I started on proper treatment for FM and actually started to have some quality of life again.

Hi and welcome!

The physio should have asked you to be refered to a rhumatologist first then onto pain clinic when/if diagnosed but maybe the pain clinic can refer you?

Once your GP has the letter you can always ask to see a rhumi if they have said they suspect fibro.

My physio also wrote to my GP with the findings and i was sent off to see a consultant and diagnosed.

I also suffer anxiety and to start with i was always told it was my anxiety causing symptoms as fibro mimicks many conditions especially anxiety and trouble is in many cases fibro and anxiety come hand in hand which makes it more difficault and keeps you hanging around!

The reason why doctors say *its in your head* which i feel they should really explain themselves as its sounds like were not being believed is that alot of mental illnesses also give out alot of symptoms which can mimick that of fibro , for example muscle stiffness / headaches / sleep problems / tingling / muscle twitches and aches and pains.

It was having a full on physio session where she could see it was definatly more physical symptoms which changed the diagnoses to fibro. Having anxiety as well as fibro i found enhances the pain and stiffness they agrivate one another so CBT i found was helpful for both.

Iv spoken to the mental health team on many occasions and said to them that having chronic pain and anxiety i need both to be at a level to be able to cope, if one is up the other goes with it so i need regular therapy also for my mental health

Thanks all for your welcomes and support.

Had the day off work today as I felt crappy. Struggling to be my old self at work .

Got the Doctors tomorrow to chat about what the physio said. Im just hoping my GP understands it and doesn't try to fob me off with "ITs just anxiety". I'm hoping the doc can diagnose me and hopefully give me something for the pain.
