Hi... Newly diagnosed and feeling a bit lost

Postby leikela » Wed Sep 04, 2013 6:08 pm

Hi all, I'm Rachel, 30, and have just been diagnosed with fibro in July this year. After being ill since September last year and being told by one doctor it was "probably just your mental health issues" (I suffer with anxiety, depression and PTSD), I switched doctors and immediately got referred to a consultant at the hospital. After being poked and prodded by three different doctors (two of whom were in full RAF uniform...!) they diagnosed FM and an as-yet undiagnosed autoimmune disorder. I had a shot of steroids which just served to be incredibly painful for two weeks with no benefit and bloods sent off to a specialist lab to determine what else is going on.

Now I am really struggling to cope with symptoms as I'm on so many meds for mental health and tachycardia that they're not able to prescribe much else to ease the pain. I could almost cope with the debilitating fatigue but the pain frequently has me in tears it's so bad.
Well that was an essay, sorry! Hope to be able to chat more with you all soon, it's lovely to find people who will understand, even though its in rather unfortunate circumstances.

Welcome. Sorry to hear you have fibro. A pain clinic may help with the pain and don't accept there is nothing that can be done. There are meds that can help & although I haven't yet found something that helps totally I have had some relief.
Hope you find some relief soon :gentle hugs:

If your dog doesn't like someone, then you probably shouldn't either

Hi Rachel and :welcome: to the forum :cow-wave: :cow-wave: :cow-wave: :cow-wave: :cow-wave: maybe while you are waiting you could have a try at some of the suggestions Flup has made, we do understand how hard it is trying to cope so when you are feeling particularly bad come on here and we will try to distract you (just as you have distracted FLuppy, it'll take ages to get her focused again now     )

:welcome:

Sorry to hear you have FIbro Rachel at least you now have the dx and can start to find a regime that fits with your lifestyle and will hopefully ease the symptoms. As Flup has said try the non medically ideas along side anything the GP might have prescrbed , they can't do much harm but can help ease some of the symptoms. My favourite of the moment is a nice warm bath with Epsom salts in it . I am always amazed at how well I feel for a few hours after even if gettin in & out of the bath is difficult and a pantomime in itself

Have to admit a Fibro moment now. One of those parts of the day Rachel where your brain is mush and nonsense takes over, things like you can't think of the word for something very familiar, you go in and out of rooms cause you keep forgetting what you want , the milk goes in the cupboard and the cereal in the fridge . Most of us call it Fibro Fog . So if you are already getting these tricky moment you are not going mad its just part of the package I'm afraid

Anyway I have for the last while been buying my Epsom salts from the chemsit but at £1.87 for quite a small tub I decided I had to try and see how I could get it cheaper . The big supermarkets near me don't stock it so went on puter and found a supplier. ticked the box gave in my details and settld back for the arrival of my parcel. Parcel arrived yesterday and I was quite surprised at the size of it sitting on the doorstep. .......seems I had ticked for 5kg instead of the 1kg I thought !

Epsom salts anyone ?

Good luck Rachel and don't forget no matter how you feel there will be someone here who has walked the path before and is willing to give a helping hand :-D

Hi Rachel,
Im glad you ahve also found this site, i am also newly diagnosed (and have had issues with mental health). For years I have thought I was finally going mad and all this was in my head, even though docs assured me it wasnt. Something that really helped me was the pain clinic, he knew striaght away what meds to give me and listened but above all he looked like he understood what i was saying about my symptoms, pain, sensations etc. you could maybe try a pain clinic it may be worth a try.
take care,

Hi Rachel,
I know exactly how you feel. Some of the meds for your mental illness will probably clash with the pain medication. I am on an opiate patch called Fentynal. There are certain anti-d's that will clash with this medication. I am wondering if you are able to take Endep? Not sure what you are on but Endep is for depression/anxiety and it also helps with nerve pain. I was on it for a few months and it was brilliant for the FM pain but I found it hard to function as it really knocked me for a six! I was dopey all day! Speak to your health care professionals about meds that compliment each other and have multiple uses. Good luck and big, gentle hugs.
