Hi all i am new here

Postby halo83 » Sat Sep 07, 2013 3:18 pm

Hello everybody,
I am kelly, 30 years old and was finally diagnosed with fibro last year after years in and out of hospital for tests. Once lupus, reumatoid arthritis and other things had been ruled out, a specialist did the test for fibro involving touching specific parts of the body and i was finally diagnosed.

it felt like a weight had been lifted after all the years. It is hard living with fibro, i always say i have bad days and worse days there are no good days as im in pain 24/7. friends and family dont understand why i had to leave my job or why it has taken me 8 years to do my degree, or 3 years to learn to drive- it is easy for them as they dont have the physical pain or the trouble remembering things it really afects every aspect of your life,

sometimes i cant string a sentance together and people look at you like you are stupid or on drugs. I have to write everything down in several diffeent places just to remmeber basic things, i have to count tablets out so that i do not double dose or underdose. at times it makes you feel a failure when you see your peers in a career, getting married and having kids when i struggle to get out of bed each morning.

On top of this i have other health problems also- menieres disease which causes hearing problems, tinnitus, vertigo etc, asthma, and anemia. My sister is constantly putting me down and belittling me when all i do is the best i can and persevere with things even if it takes longer than other people i have a determination that one day i will get there. I used to think i was just thick for failing exams but now know it was because my memory would go blank and couldnt retain information.

I am getting good marks in my degree now and in two years will graduate. its frustrating that i cannot work at a normal pace or things take a lot longer but you just have to carry on. would be interesting so see how other people manage and the symptoms you experience. ttfn :-)

Hi Kelly and :welcome: to the forum :cow-wave: :cow-wave: :cow-wave: Dont beat yourself up over taking longer to achieve things your peers manage, it is part of this condition and you will get there in the end. FM does affect your ability to retain information.

As for your sister, perhaps printing out the story 'one for the non believers' and leaving it for her to read may help her to understand what life can be like for you a lot of members do find it helps a bit. If she is still unwilling to understand then I'm afraid your only option is to ignore her as unfortunately we cant make others understand if they dont want to

Anyway good luck with your studies and if you have any specific questions dont hesitate to ask or maybe make use of the search facility as without a doubt your problem will have come up before and if not we will do our best to find some advice for you :-D :-D :-D :-D

:welcome: to our little sanctuary Kelly :cow-wave: :cow-wave:

The things you have and are experiencing with people, things taking longer to accomplish etc are experiences that most of us have gone thru so you're in good company on here :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: Being overly hard on ourselves about things is part of the package as well

I work on the basis now that if someone isn't at least prepared to try and understand a little about FM and how it affects me, then it says far more about them as a person than what it does about me. All we can do is try and makes others aware how things can be for us, if they don't want to know then that is their choice. I understand such things are difficult when it is such a close relative as I went thru a similar experience with someone very close to me not long after I was dx'd. Things did eventually start to change, but in my case it took some very drastic steps, which, with hindsight, I'm not so sure I would want to go thru again.

:goodluck2: :goodluck2: :goodluck2: with your studies :cow-wave: :cow-wave: :cow-wave: Anything you want to know about, just ask and we'll try to help you with it :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing:

hello to both Denys and fluppypuffy, it is great to here from people who are experiencing the same things as myself  thank you both for understanding, i guess you know exactly where i am coming from. denys i did what you suggested about printing off 'one for the non-believers' i thought that was fantastic and really summed up the condition. i find i am learning how to pace myself now and knowing my boundaries, like if i have to do a job it will take me longer but i would rather have that than suffer the next day with not being able to move. I find also that stress can make the fm worse. back in may this year i lost one of my best friends and my beloved cat within a week of each other and have never felt so utterly desperate in all my life, i was also the victim or identity theft and the stress nearly sent me over the edge, i dont know how i got through it. knowing that people are there is a real lifesaver.

There is always lots of support and understanding Kelly as we have all had so many similar experiences along the way. Stress is one of FM's favourite things to feed on, so when it does strike, it will push you as far as it possibly can :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: For times like when you feel like you're about to go over the edge and down into that black abyss, we keep a rope in the corner that we can drop down to you so that hopefully you won't drop as far as you could. You always know when the rope gets to you as it has a feather boa attached that tickles as soon as it touches you

And for the times we can't help with an answer, there's always [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] [chocolate] and :teddy-bear: :teddy-bear: :teddy-bear: :teddy-bear: :teddy-bear: :teddy-bear: :teddy-bear: :teddy-bear: :teddy-bear: :teddy-bear: :teddy-bear: to hug :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing:

so nice to know support is there for those difficult days. it sounds mad but my beautiful cat marmite used to help me cope with the pain and help me relax but now that he is in heaven i feel so lost and in more pain most days. I have had a neighbours cat come and visit me recently, he used to play with marmite, i give him some of marmites toys to play with and it somehow helps with my FM pain, i do not want to get another cat but i do look forward to these visits. is there anything specific that help you? i love hot water bottles also even during a summer heatwave , people think i am     but it helps ease pain a little :-P

It doesn't sound mad at all that your furbaby helped you cope and relax, a lot of us feel better for having our furryends. It's always sad when it's time for one of our babies to go to Rainbow Bridge, it sounds like the visits from your neighbour's :cat2: are helping make that Marmite hole in your life a little less sore for you tho, which is :blowkiss: :blowkiss: :blowkiss: :blowkiss: :blowkiss: I know I'd be lost without my furbaby

Quite a few of us find heat/warmth can help with easing things. I like to soak in a warm bath with nice smellies, then spend a bit of time applying nice body butters or lotions, as well as helping me relax, there is something about the body butters/lotions (they're all natural ingredients and fragranced with essential oils) that helps ease the twitches and jerks that decide to attack me at night. Not the perfect solution to the problem, but at least I smell nice and my skin is lovely and soft :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing:
