fibromalgia????

Postby shell81 » Tue Jan 21, 2014 9:48 pm

Hi all I'm new to this site I'm looking for some advice please?? My husband is 46 for the past 12 months he has been living living in constant pain he has had blood test after blood test Mri scan which shown crushed c6 disc but problems he is having doctors say wouldn't cause the pain he is in here goes with all his symptoms.

Severe tearing pains in legs, arms, neck, back. he gets severe headaches, pain in his jaw and teeth. all this started on the left side of his body but is now starting on the right side. he lives in constant pain daily, some days worse than others where he can't do any thing as it causes him so much pain. sometimes you only have to touch him and it sends shooting pains down his body. he doesn't sleep some nights, he is up all night in severe pain. as soon as he lies down the pain starts.

he has to wear a thermal hat and scarf for bed as, if he gets cold his pain gets worse. he also keeps his hat and scalf on all day. he gets a lot of pins and needles and numbness. also the last 2 weeks he has been having trouble eating as, when he eats foods like bread, pasta, meat, it gets lodged in his throat and he starts to choke.

it's been a nightmare trying to get a diagnosis, going from doctor to doctor. he has now been referred to a neurologist and rheumatologist, and the pain clinic to help manage his pain. he is currently on 3600 mg of gabapentin a day, and 40 mg of amitriptiline at night, but he is still in constant pain. it's awful for me to see him like this.

after doing some research myself it sounds to me like he has fibromalgia. what do you guys who have it think? He also has days where he is really depressed please help
Thanks shelley

Hi shall81,
Yes sounds very similer but I'm not a Doctor it's takes most people a long time to get a diagnosis I was a Rheumatologist who diagnosed me & yes 3600 mg of gabapentin a day and 40 mg of amitriptiline are good treatments although high doses of amitriptiline can have bad side effects like a permanently dry mouth. There are a lot of help on sights like this & on the net so start looking it can be very frighting at first but things will get better but if it is Fibro then he will have it for life or until they find a cure. I was only diagnosed last year & after a very rough start my life has got much better so there is hope things will improve so don't lose hope I don't know it all but I hope I've been of some help.

Hi

As you know we can diagnose only doctors can do this. For the last 10 years and countless operations i have just last year been diagnosed the fibro. I was in constant pain taking a variety of different drugs. Has as with your husband i never got a good night sleep, was in total agony all over my body my arms would burn, my legs would burn too with constant numbness and pins and needle sensation, both my feet and heels feel as if i've just stood on burning ember for and hour and let them blister no matter what i do i can't sooth them.

So if your husband is suffering really bath you press for answers and put it to your doctor that you have been on the internet and your husband symptoms all go to a condition called "fibromaylia"

Good Luck !!!!! :-D
Live life to the full as you don't know when it will end xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

:welcome: to our little escape from it all Shelley :cow-wave: :cow-wave:

I'm sorry to hear how things are for Mr Shell81, and I hope you'll appreciate that we aren't able to say if it could be FM that is affecting him. For that, it needs to be a done by a doctor/specialist/consultant. There are a number of other conditions that share a very similar range of symptoms and problems with FM, and to get to the bottom of what is making Mr Shell81 feel as he does, all these other possibilities need to be investigated. It tends to be when all these other possibilities have been ruled out that an FM dx is arrived at. To get there tho takes time, which adds even more to the frustrations felt.

If you haven't done so yet, you need to try and see what your GP's thoughts and attitude to the possibility of FM as a dx for Mr Shell81 might be. To help with this, people have found that taking some info about FM from a reputable source, such as or the main along with details of symptoms experienced, and notes about similarities between them is a useful place to start. If you have time to do this before Mr Shell81's appt tomorrow, it might help start things moving in a better direction for both of you.

Mr Shell81 might find it helpful to have a bit of looky and a read thru some of the info and advice on here, esp with there being some male FMers on here. Knowing that there are others who are experiencing similar problems, understand how it can make them feel, as well as being able to talk about things, ask questions and generally feel that they're not going completely LaaLaa after all, can help make a difference.

Hi hubby been to the docs today for his blood results which are showing he has an enlarged liver was a different doctor today he has decided to wean him off the gabapentin as he is on a very high dose 3600 mg daily this doctor thinks this is way to high as it isn't helping with all the pain he is in he has to go for a liver scan to see what's going on as he isn't a drinker so something is making his liver swell do you get liver swelling with fm?? Mentioned fm to the doctor today he said there is a chance he has it but can't diagnose till other possibilities have been ruled out so still a waiting game he has a lot of appointments coming up he is seeing a neurologist a rheumatologist a liver scan an Mri scan and pain clinic plus physio hopefully soon he will be diagnosed with what ever it is he has fingers crossed sooner than later

Liver swelling isn't something that I've come across in relation to FM, it tends to be due to an underlying condition. This linky explains more about

:goodluck2: :goodluck2: :goodluck2: for both of you with the upcoming appts. Hopefully this will be the start of some answers being found that help explain why Mr Shell81 has been feeling so pawley :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed:

Thanks fluffy puppy. We have been to see another doctor today as we wasn't happy with the doctor that has been treating him we felt he was fibbing us off all the time anyway the doctor we have seen today was very helpful he has put him on better painkillers the first time anything has worked there called bupernorphine has anyone ever been prescribed these? This doctor thinks his liver has swollen as he said the gabapentin dose he is on is very very high his liver scan is next week hopefully we are getting somewhere now with a more understanding doctor he has also done an urgent referral to a neurologist as he said it sounds like a neurological disease and needs a specialist in that area to diagnose him thanks for all your reply xxx
