Severe FM, bed bound ALL the time. Help!!!

Postby Rhiainc » Sat Feb 15, 2014 9:21 am

Hi everyone,
It is actually my mother in law who suffers. I'm really concerned for her.
She was diagnosed about 3yrs ago and has been bed bound for the last year maybe more. She might have one day in 3months where she can get up and dressed and walk about. These days are rare and when she does manage them she will suffer more the following day.

She's in constant pain she even struggles to get out of bed or sit up on her own. A myriad of medication means she's completely spaced out and her husband can't cope with the 'dimniss' so she finds herself not taking them to stay with it and suffering more!

She is struggling to eat, I can just about manage to get soup down her, and when she is cooked for it's not very healthy. I have suggested exercise but the fact that she can't even lift her legs doesn't bode well.

She is depressed and family don't visit as often as they should. Her husband is having to care for their young grandson and I'm afraid does neglect her a little. He won't accept care or any help.

I don't know what to do to help and just wondered if anyone else has had it that severe? She was told last week by the doctor that it's progressive which has made her even more depressed!

Is there any light??

Thank you!

There are a small minority that can getbnit that severe, there is a specialist rehabilitation centre in bath that can help. A friend of mine who was severe went there, and did get some of her mobility back, its wir h asking to be referred for intense rehab. Also worth checking her vit D levels as my friend was dangerously low.

Depression will make her condition worse, FM is not progressive as such, it can get worse and will with complete inactivity but will not kill you. People with FM have died but its generally more to do with the way FM is viewed by others and an inability to get adequate care and treatment or other conditions that they may have in conjunction with FM.

I agree with the last poster, it sounds essential that your mother in law gets some proper help and the specialist centre sounds just the thing, whether or not she can get into this, I would have thought counselling might help to lift her depression a little :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed:

Thank you for your replies. I'll have to do some more research into what facilities we have local to us. I've found a nutritional shake that I'm going to try and get her to drink as she really is on a very poor diet of tea and coffee!

Thanks so much
