New, confused and in a lot of pain

Postby purplesusi » Wed Sep 16, 2009 2:00 pm

Hello everybody.

I have been looking on this and a few other sites for a few days now. I have decided to join because of my personal circumstances. I have not had the confirmed diagnoses of fibromylagia however, after seeing my doctor on Monday and in tears describing what I am feeling he listened and then tapped away, printed out 5 pieces of paper and on the front in big bold lettering was 'FIBROMYLAGIA' I am having blood tests to eliminate other conditions.

since I was 17 I have suffered with a bad back, mainly lumbar and over the last 5 yrs have experienced increased pain on the spine in several areas, (neck, top, middle) all spots of throbbing and tender points. I have also got buttock bursitis (or so they like to call it) This restricts my position for sleep.

More recently I have been suffering with knee and leg pain even right down to my feet. Although I have read many things I would like to ask if it is normal to have a few specific areas affected mainly by FM and not have all the tender spots that you read about? Apart from constant pain in lumbar, upper back, hips, knees and legs I suffer with shooting pains and throbs in the most strange areas, mainly though my limbs and head.

May I also ask what I am to expect from the doc if my bloods come back normal? Will I , should I receive a scan and referal to a rheumatologist? I really wish I could receive a pain releif injection in my spine but unfortunately I am relying on stretching, ibuprofen and co-codemel.

Sorry for all the questions and many thanks for listening,

regards,
Susi

:welcome: Susi.

Fibro will not show up in blood tests, so if your bloods come back as normal it is more then likely to refer you to a Rheumy, they will normally DX you with fibro once everything else has been ruled out.
The Rheumy will then refer you back to your GP with a list of meds for you to try, then the GP with normally take over if it is fibro.

This is what happened in my case, some areas might differ slightly in the way they go about refering you to a Rheumy, but i think in most cases you will be sent to see a Rheumy.

Keep us updated on how you get on. :hugs:

Your symptoms would tie in with myofascial pain syndrome. This affects regional areas how you are describing. People with Fibro often get this, but you can also get this without having Fibro. You would really need to see a specialised myofascial release therapist for this, although some doctors (e.g. Prof Davies) can tell you if you have myofascial trigger points and offer medications and injections to help ease them.

Hi there,

Well, how very interesting. I will look into this. Thank you for your input and making me feel welcome.

I have my blood test on Thursday and then I don't get to see the doc about it til mid October! Do you think that what you suggested would come up in my blood test if I was to have it?

Many thanks x

No, there's no blood test for myofascial pain.
