Postby Sally_x » Tue Dec 08, 2009 2:53 pm

Hey everyone! I am sooo glad I found this site!

I am currently undergoing investigation for FIbromyalgia as my rheumatologist thinks I have this...am seeing him on Monday to get my blood test results.

I am currently in my final year at university studying Physiotherapy buttt all of that has now had to be put on hold as I just cant cope with the work placememnts and work load :( so have to wait to get a diagnosis and find the right medication for me before restarting this year :(

I was sooo happy to find the topic with how to explain this condition to "non believers" or those who just don't understnad so have printed it off to show my parents to explain what is going on with me.

Anyone else here as young as me??

I developed Fibro when I was 21...I'm now 28.
I run FibroAction, a small national charity raising awareness of Fibromyalgia Syndrome. I am not a qualified healthcare professional. If you would like medical references for any facts quoted, just PM me.

Haha..I wish I knew about it :( Unfortunately I only know about making people pace themselves, and using heat treatments...which is easy enough for a non affected person to tell a pateint...butt when you;re the one that is affected it doesn't sound helpful at all!!

Linzword..sorry to hear that :( How have you progressed over those 7 years...if you don't mind me asking? :?

I am guessing/assuming most people have had to resolve to working part time rather than full time??

I developed Fibro after a car crash and whiplash in late 2001. I then went downhill quite quickly, not helped by the fact that it took me over 3 years to get a diagnosis, during which time I was pushing myself to work in London, commuting in and doing shifts!

Unfortunately, after getting my diagnosis, I didn't get effective treatment - wasn't even aware that effective treatments existed despite going to a (very negative) support group and seeing numerous consultants.

By 2005, I'd had to stop full time work. By late 2006, I was unable to work, nearly housebound and disabled, using sticks and scooters to get around. I was getting basic myofascial trigger point release and physio (privately) which kept me vaguely mobile, but I very sick and in a huge amount of pain most of the time, despite TENS, hypnotherapy, CBT and relaxation (plus amitriptyline and painkillers).

I then started seeing Prof Davies privately in desperation (my parents paid for me to see him as I couldn't get anywhere on the NHS) and he put me on a med which worked, and I started seeing a specialist myofascial release therapist, and within 6 months I was back on my feet.

I could now work full time when on medications, but I choose to do charity work instead (my husband is very supportive). I'm currently not on any medications as we'd like to have a baby, but my Fibro is still reasonably well controlled.

Hope that helps!

Hi Sally. Welcome but sorry you have a need to be here. I am 21 and I was diagnosed a few months ago. If you want to chat, feel free to drop me a line. I really hope your rheumatologist can help you and give you some advice.

Ahh Linzworld, thank you, tha was very helpful :) And best of luck to you and your husband with regards to baby :) I have read that some people, when pregnant seem to say their symptoms relieve slightly due to the increase in hormomes which is good, because that has been something I have worried about for the future!

Hey Sophie :) Thanks for the reply :) How are you gettin on with medication and treatments so dar as you have only been diagnosed for a few months??

I just had my second rheum appt yesterday where he told me all the millions of blood tests he did came back normal sooo he is basically "just putting it down to fibro" and gave me a leaflet...babbled on about have a small dose of anti-depressants before going to bed to get the deep part of sleep we are missing....anddd that was it! apart from telling me to do "aerobic exercises till I am red and out of breathe" and tried to explain that a 5min walk makes me out of breathe and sometimes just sitting still leaves me out of breathe...but he wouldnt listen!!

So my dad and I are going to my GP this week and are guna try and get something kick started ourselves!

Yup..I tried swimming back in July (when my joints weren;t half as bad as they are now!) as I used to swim twice a week and was a swimming teacher a couple of years ago...buttt the pain was tooo much in my joints to do it ...arggh!! But thank you for the idea :)

I will wait to see what my GP says at the end of this week (hopefully I can phone up before the hyperchondriacts taking up appointments for a broken nail :P) but I am not holding much hope...but I have seen on here people talking about Professor Davies at Guys Hospital so I might mention him to my dad and give him a try if my GP is no help.
