Doctors have me confused....

Postby curlygirl » Fri Dec 18, 2009 10:40 am

Hello all, my name is Tracey and I am new here. I haven't been diagnosed but my Dr has me confused. I have been off work with Post Viral Fatigue since the end of October. When the Dr told me what I had I went on a little search of the internet and came up with info on Fibro. It was like a little light going on. I have had many of the symptoms for years, in particular the fatigue, muscle pain, knee, back and shoulder pain which is excruciating at times, ongoing sinus probs, IBS, vision and dry eye problems and on and on..... My family think I'm a bit of a lightweight because I am always moaning and have always got something wrong with me. I mentioned it to the Dr and asked if he thought that it was possible I may have Fibro. He said its quite possible but there is no medical way to diagnose only clinical and would I like to be prescribed Amitriptyline anyway. I'm not really one for tablets because they quite often make me feel ill - paracetamol is about my limit - and I wouldn't want to take tablets for something no one has actually told me I have. I'm not sure if I should be pushing to see a specialist or just carry on as I have been until things change one way or another.

On a more positive note, it has been really good reading all the posts on this site. For once I don't feel like I'm mental

A rheumatologist would know more about doing the Tender Point test, which is the main clinical test for Fibro. A rheumy may also check for more other conditions that might mimic Fibro.

Ask your Dr to refer you .you do right not wanting to take meds for something that has not been diagnosed .Fibro has many symptoms that are very similar to other illness s.Your Gp seems to be pretty understanding so give him a go and get him to refer you .

Hello Curlygirl,

I hate to take meds; only paracetamol agrees with me, I have extreme or unpleasant reactions to most others...lots of docs think I'm odd when I say that to them but a) surely people metabolise in different ways and b) is it a symptom of fibro does anyone know?

Yes, ask for a rheumy referral...let us know how you go on.

Sensitivity to meds is common with Fibro but isn't doesn't mean that you can't take any, just that you have to be more careful and work harder to find out how to tolerate meds,

Hi there Tracey, belated season Greetings to everyone, Friday the 13th of November I was diagnosed that I had fibromyalgia! Strange as after going on 15 Years of time off work with a sick note muscular and skeleton aches and pains. My main concern is both the doctor and the consultant rheumatologist told me that dizziness has nothing to do with fibromyalgia! Working a three shift pattern, the night shift is a real killer after three to four hours it feels as I’m inebriated then only two or three hours sleep after a nights work. Well enough of my problems but it would be nice to know if anyone else has dizziness with real bad headaches.

oh yeah i totally get dizzyness and really bad headaches. in fact i have both right now and myh doctor tells me that it is totally a part of my fibro although i have so many different things that now i attribute most weird things to fibro.

You should definately get diagnosed before taking meds, esp if they don't agree with you. It might be fibro and then you and your rheumatologist can work out what you should be taking and maybe refer you to the pain clinic. You are right to push for a diagnosis, it took me ten years but it was so worth it when i got it as it meant that i could tell all those who said i was making it up what it really was.

ok off to lie down as head feels like it is going to explode and i promised my daughter we would do some baking this afternoon. :?

Yeh, I get dizziness too; worse when I put my head back. Compression of the spinal cord as it goes up into the head is my prob and it's worse when fibro flares. Also sinus probs can cause that too and labyrinthitis.

Thank you both for the replies! I was dianosed on the Friday13th But all my GP said after seeing the results from the consultant was" Oh Now - do you want to be labelled with FM?" :dunno: No just diagnosed with what I have been suffering with all these Years! I'm on no medication as yet as I can cope with the pain most of the time but feeling drunk and off balance most of the time is a different matter.

I get bouts of vertigo and have betahistine tabs for it (they also make me dizzy but not as bad as the vertigo  ) A lot of people with FM suffer from balance problems. If I stand up straight, hold my arms out in front of me and close my eyes I fall over :? :yikes:

So it seems as if a few fm sufferers have a balance or dizziness problem! so it certainly seems odd that two consultants,GP and a Physiotherapist all say it has to be something else causing the problem, do the U.K. medical profession actually know all the symptoms or are they playing catch up wit the U.S. of A. Sorry folk but this seems to be my worse side affect " Feeling drunk without a sniff of the barmaid's apron :D
