Do I have Fibromyalgia

Postby coral » Wed Apr 07, 2010 3:05 am

Hi everybody. I'm wondering whether to go back to my GP's and ask if I can be referred to a Rheumatologist to find out if I have Fibromyalgia. It all started last September after having a gall bladder op (removed). Whatever is wrong with me has progressed so much over these last 7 months. Had blood tests (normal), 3 urine samples cos it hurt to pee (normal), ultrasound (normal), chest x-ray(normal), back x-ray - GP said I have Athritis in my spine. Recently had an MRI and still waiting for the results. GP now referring me to an oral specialist because since the begining of January my tongue is so painful every day, had drops, lozenges, sprays nothing works.

Best if I just describe my symptoms I guess but they're quite a few. I have severe pain in my lower and upper back with pain in right ribs. Got pain in both my hips and legs which is much much worse in the cold weather. Also when its really bad I get really bad pelvic pain. Have had lots of stomach problems too which doctor think was my main problem, thought i had IBS gave me medication then said it wasn't. Have to run to toilet sometimes, terrible gurgling noises, bloatiness, feeling so hungry but am not. I've got restless leg syndrome (was on medication a few years ago for that but was taken off it as it was dangerous) so am awake most nights with twitchy legs. Other symptoms which has developed a few weeks ago is like a feeling of tiny hot pin pricks in my head, arms, hands, legs and feet, tonight I can't stop itching with it. Feels like when you've been stung with stingy nettles. Other thing is when I wash the dishes I notice that the water feels so much hotter and the same when I get in the bath, my skin really stings. Then there's the tiredness, can sleep for 8 hours and after being awake for an hour really could sleep again. I get really dizzy and light headed and my vision is a lot worse lately really blurry. I don't know there's just too many things and not sure if I can remember them all. Sometimes it hurts to touch places and when my hubby hugs me that can hurt too, even underneath my buttocks hurt. It's 3.30am and I have to be in work for 7 but there is no way I can sleep even though I'm so so tired because of the itching and burning and RLS.

So does anyone think that its possible I have fibromyalgia and that I should talk to my GP about this as all test seem to be normal. Thank you for listening.

It could be FM but we aren't medically qualified to say yes or no only that a lot of your symptoms sound familiar. But since FM mimics other illnesses such as MS or lupus for example you would need to see a rheumatologist or neurologist.

I would suggest mentioning it to your GP as something that someone has suggested you have and see what he says. If he's reluctant to consider it then I woud ask for a rheumatology appointment, since you have pain in muscles, joints etc then tehre's no reason for him to say no.

In the meantime stick with us and we'll do all we can to help.

hi and thanks for getting back to me. I will make an appointment to see my GP again,we have several where I go. I hate going because I've been so much and I'm sure they're getting fed up of me going all the time. This time I will mention fibromyalgia and see what they say.

So tired today only had 2 hours sleep then went to work (I'm only part time). Pain everywhere and that burning prickling sensation all over. Thought that would have eased today but apparently not. My sister laughs and says that I'm a hypochondriac that makes me so annoyed, she should live inside my body for a few days, see how she copes with it. People can't see pain, just some say to me "you look tired". If they only knew all the other things that goes with it.

Have to work in the morning so hope that I can get some sleep tonight.

Will keep you posted on what happens at GP's when I can get an appointment. Also hope to get my results from the MRI scan that I had done on 19th March.

Hi got an appointment with GP on Monday morning at 10.20am. I was hoping it was one of the usual GP's that I see but he's away for a while and also the lady GP that I've been seeing so this one is a doctor I've never saw before. I will say that someone suggested I might have it because of the symptoms and see what he says. If he doesn't agree then I will ask him to refer me to a rheumatologist/neurologist because I've been ill every day since last September and its much worse since then. They have all my notes. I also rang the Doctor that referred me for an MRI scan as I still haven't had my results and the lady said she will get the Doctor's secretary to chase it up tomorrow.

Keep your chin up Coral, the thing with this problem is as you say we look normal. All of us have had the 'it's all in your head' comments so don't take any notice just keep plugging away. This site is a godsend for us, I haven't been a member for very long but there is loads of advice and everyone is very friendly, good luck on Monday maybe you could print off some of the information regarding symptoms just in case the doc asks you why the person you spoke to thought you had it!!? You may not need it but it might help if you are prepared anyway as I said good luck :hugs:

Thanks Denys. I think I will print off a list of symptoms and marked mine against those, just in case. I'm just so sick and tired of having all different tests and all coming back ok when I know that something is really wrong. I suffered a lot when I was a child of terrible pains in my legs. Doctor used to be called out quite a bit to me in them days (I'm 48 by the way) and said it was Rheumatic. They changed the name later to growing pains. Remember my mam frequently rubbing algipan (relax now) into my legs and crying cos it burnt so much. That's how my legs feel now, just like a constant toothache.

Just feel like I've been rolled in stingy nettles today and its burning and itching like crazy all over. Am so so tired because of only 2 hours sleep last night but will stay awake until 11pm otherwise I won't sleep tonight and got work in the morning.

You're right this is a brilliant site and everyone is so friendly on here. I've been reading quite a lot and its very informative.

Thanks so much Shazq, not holding my breath on it though but will ask to be referred if he doesn't come up with anything sound. And if that fails then I'll just have to pay private again. Ended up paying £160 last December to see a private gasterentologist because GP was convinced all my problems were to do with my stomach. I do have a 5cm hiatus hernia and had camera down to confirm that in Feb 2009. This private Dr wanted me to have another camera but of course on NHS cos I couldn't afford to go private with that too. In the meantime had another appointment through from gasterentologist that my GP had referred me to (saw private Dr as couldn't wait for this appointment, took 3 months in total) who said I want you to have an MRI scan because its nothing to do with your stomach its all to do with your spine. So its been swings and roundabouts for months now and I really want it sorted. Of course I don't want it to be Fibromyalgia or ME or anything but it would be good to know exactly what is wrong with me. I am not imagining the pain, fatigue and all other symptoms and I just want someone to believe me.

we believe you, I know that isn't a great consolation. I felt relief when I got my diagnosis as at last I had a name and I think that helps even though you then have to deal with the consequences. Hope you manage some sleep tonight  remember we are always here even if the answer isn't straight away someone answers at some point during the day (hope that makes sense a little foggy at the mo!!) :hugs:

Thanks everyone, feel a bit better today. Maybe because the sun is shining and its not so cold. Did have a better nights sleep but I did take a sleeping tablet. Don't like to take them unless I have to but I had to come into work this morning and then visit my gran at the hospital straight after so just had to make sure I had sleep. Don't think I could cope today with a day like yesterday.

Hope this nice weather keeps up for a while, pain is definitely a bit easier when it isn't so cold. Maybe I should move to my husbands country morocco where its always hot lol.

Ooooh really had enough now. If all these symtoms wasn't enough to deal with I tripped over my dog Friday night and fell down the stairs. Landed on my back, lower and upper. Lower back is excrutiationg and got a big swelling on the left side and can't touch it at all. Feel like I've gone 10 round with Tyson.

Really peed off with other half and son, they do absolutely nothing to help me at all. In fact yesterday my son turned around to me and said "you are forever ill and its getting me down". Getting him down? Today I just feel like packing my bags and going to live on my own so it's only me I have to look after. My 99 year old grandmother is in hospital (just over 2 weeks) and today is the first time I can't go see her cos I'm in just way too much pain. If I had transport I would drive myself to the hospital to get my back checked out but I don't. Got the GP in the morning (might have to book a taxi)and see what he says.

OOOH Coral you poor thing, you should of got your OH to get you checked out at the hospital.
Sorry to hear your grandmother is in hospital.

Ask your GP to send you to a Rhuemy to get a DX, i know some GP`s are sending fibro sufferers to see the neuro team as well.
Write all your questions down so you dont forget.

Good luck and hope your back eases soon. :hugs:
