Newbie, In Pain and Totally Fed Up!

Postby Sharon_M » Tue Feb 08, 2011 3:26 pm

Hi Everyone

I will try not to make this too long so as not to bore anyone! My G.P. believes I have FM, and I am currently awaiting a referral to a specialist for confirmation of diagnosis. A condensed version of my story is this........

I can trace back a lot of my symptoms over many years, but never suspected anything out of the ordinary at the time, merely that I was prone to those sort of things i.e. neck pain, headaches etc. About 6 months ago I started to get a lot of lower back pain and leg pain. Like a lot of stories here I used to joke about it and say I was getting old (I'm 39 this month) as every time I got up out of a chair I would be limping and hobbling around! My G.P has told me that something usually triggers FM such as a viral infection or stress (I don't know if this is true of anyone here?) but I went through a very stressful year last year and I don't know if this resulted in how I am now. Anyway, as time has gone on, I have basically got pain just about everywhere, I feel like everything hurts. At the moment the worst for me is my top of my legs (which affects my walking, climbing the stairs, bending down to put on shoes, getting in and out of cars) and my arms from my elbow up, including my shoulders and neck. Night times are a complete nightmare (!) I don't usually have trouble falling asleep, but I wake up several times a night in a LOT of pain. If I'm lying on my side, my hips are agony, if I'm lying on my back, my back is agony. I can't turn myself over normally, I have to hold on to the side of my bed and heave myself over - not pretty!

Oh, and I also suffer from osteo-arthritis, mainly in my hands/fingers, as well as irritable bowel. Joy! :? I have also been advised by my G.P. to lose weight - I am one of life's yo yo dieters and regularly put on and lose 4 stone

I take Ibuprofen, but they don't really have much effect. My G.P. prescribed Cymbalta, but I couldn't cope with the side effects - I only took them for two days- I was severely nauseous, tired and dizzy. I have yet to go back and see if there’s something else I can try. I have read that some people on here take Tramadol, but again, the side effects I suffered from that in the past (post an operation) were unbearable as well.

I was working full time until very recently, but gave up my job so that I could reduce to part time hours - but I honestly have no idea how on earth I would cope working at all when I feel like I can barely move at the moment. I have thought of the possibility that maybe I could claim some sort of disability allowance further down the line, but my absolute main concern is that I am a foster carer (as well as a Mum of 2) and I am so worried that I won't be able to be a carer anymore, which I absolutely love doing. I feel so totally and utterly fed up. I've been putting a brave face on it, but I just want to curl into a ball and cry. Any advice? :needhug:

Hi Sharon,
firstly a massive welcome to the forum, its full of lovely, understanding, caring folk who can genuinely understand how you feel.

secondly I am so sorry that your having a ruff time, its a nightmare to discover you have fms but once you do know for sure you can start to get it under control. there is no reason to assume you would not be able to continue fostering just yet, you may find that once you are on the right medication your symptoms may reduce so dont get to worried just yet sweetie x x x

all the best to you hunny x x x x x

hi sharon,
:welcome: to the forum

it takes a very special type of person to be a foster carer, you should be so proud of yourself. :blowkiss:

drug sensitivities is a common symptom of fibro and i'm afraid it can be a case of trial and error to find the right ones for you. please do not lose heart.

there are aids and gadgets that can make your life easier. for example i have short rails, about 10" long, on either side of the bed to help me turn in the night. an OT can assess you and provide equipment. i have equipment to help me in every room.

please have a look at disability living allowance. it sounds as if you would be eligable for the maximum payments. :dunno:

if you have any questions or just want to rant, we are here for you :grouphug:

Hi Sharon, its not the condition you claim for but how it affects you on a daily basis, you need to get a claim pack, telephone the disability living (DWP) :hugs: :hugs:

Thanks for the reply Denys and Blue Princess. Denys, I will look into the Disability Allowance - though I'm still unsure whether I should or shouldn't attempt to claim :dunno:

Blue Princess, I quickly read your initial post. I think your experience with your G.P sounds like mine. Although my G.P has made a referral to a specialist - though a specialist in what, I really don't know?! :? ) I was pretty much given some tablets to try and that was it. I wasn't warned about the side effects of the tablets or that I could experience sensitivity to them. No real advice or what to expect. I feel a bit lost at the moment! I'm trying to read what I can, but from what I've read, although there are a lot of similiarities with symptoms, everyone's are a different!

Thanks again for the replies :D
