Hi everyone, honestly not sure I should be here!

Hi, as I say Im not convinced I have fibromyalgia. I went to my doctor a month ago, after having constant pain in my upper back and shoulders and no sleep for 10 weeks. My GP proded my back, pinpointing the pain, then said I have fibromyalgia. I had never heard of it so obviously I researched the condition. EVERY site I have visited tells me that this condition is only diagnosed after lengthy tests to rule out any other diseases eg arthritis. At first he gave me a cream to rub on my shoulders which made no difference at all. I am now taking amitryptaline every night (20mg). This is the only thing he has given me so I also take diclafenec and ibuprofen every day (also tramadol if the pain gets that bad!)
Im going back to the doctor on the 21st March ( a different 1) and I plan to tell her what Ive read online. Im afraid she'll resent me telling her her job though and refuse to refer me for other tests. I know that fibro isnt curable, but I may have something that can be cured?! I should say that I have other symptoms that are listed for fibro ( restless legs, burning pain in hips and knees when I wake in a morning, vertigo, disturbed sleep, forgetfullness, which I put down to age-48!) and for the last couple of weeks the pain is spreading down my arms, making my hands feel tingly or numb.
Sorry to go on, I just wondered if you can give me your opinions.

Thanks, Carol

 carol,if i`m honest i was and still am like you thinking its not fm .but have been told its denial.i must admit i have been like it 30 years and only since 2004  think have been diagnosed with fm was told in 80s me ,but have other illnesses too .which apparently hides in fm .i have had lots of scans ,needle tests prodded poked by numerus specialists .in my case i had lots of different things kept popping up.oh and blood tests ,soorybit foggy this morn . :? .if you think itsnot voice your concerns to dr.write a list of everything you are suffering with ,like a diary ,bit monotonus i know but it helps .even read the other illnesses on here . :fingerscrossed: you get answers, help soon .try not to get to worked up worrying cause it wll cause a flare :goodluck1: :blowkiss: :flowers:

Hi carol

I do have empathy for u, and theres nothing wrong with questioning gps opinion etc. Im like Nutty1 in that ive got other things going on at the same time. My rhumentologist thought back in '07 that i mite have fibro, but no1 told me. Was only given a proper diagnosis last month. Ive got v painful wrist/palms/knuckles + fingers, also both hands decide to let go of things that im holding with no warning, also alot of the time my brain is telling my fingers to do a job (like typing) and its just not happening. Really frustrated me :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: cos i can touch type and can type 50-60 words a min. My rhumentologist IS checking out diff options (instead of the fibro) that could explain y my hands r like this, which im ever so greatful 4. BUT, im hoping, like u, that its not down to a symptom of fibro and is actually something else. Hopefully that can b treated separately. Cos without the proper use of my hands im honestly stuffed :x Have quite alot of restrictions to my life already and not being able to use my hands for everyday tasks, doesnt wont do :nono: :banghead: Plz carrying talking to other members as they are absolutely :woot: and are being a life line for me in my hr(s) of need. Take care pet :flowers:

Hi Carol, if you think the diagnosis is wrong it's your right to ask for a second opinion. You are right when you say FM can only be DX once other things have been ruled out as there are a large number of crossover symptoms with FM and other conditions but in the meantime :welcome: to the forum and :goodluck1: :goodluck1: :goodluck1: with your docs

Thanks everyone, I'll def ask the dr next week. If I have got fibro I think it must be only mild or at the beginning stages (if theres such a thing!) as I dont think I suffer as much as some of you guys. Even though my back is constantly sore and I feel like I have to keep stretching and taking painkillers, the other aches and pains are manageable and Im still working ( glad when its home time tho!!).
Thanks again, :hugs: I'll let you know what they say

Hi Carol, it affects people differently and some find they can lead a perfectly normal life with just an occasional flare and :fingerscrossed: this is you too :hugs: :hugs:

 Carol :welcome: to our mad little world. I typed a lovely reply to you earlier, pressed submit and off it floated into the ether, never to be seen again   :swear1: :swear1:

What I was going to post has already been covered, so all I say is, if you feel you haven't got the right dx, tell your gp and ask for initial blood tests to be carried out. When the results come back, hopefully they'll give a better idea of what may happening and what may need to be done next :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :hugs: :hugs:

:welcome: Carol

I can only echo what the others have said, get a second opinion and ask for other things to be ruled out first. :goodluck1:
Keep us updated. :hugs:
