Do you think I could have FM?

Postby bricheno » Sat Apr 02, 2011 2:30 pm

Hi
Newbie here - could do with some advice on whether I should push for FM diagnosis?
started with trigeminal neuralgia in 2009 - progressed to bad pressure headaches through latter part of year - had numerous sinus tests, xrays, mri brain scan, nothing. Then had accupuncture and physio, physio suggested it was a neck problem - got diagnosed with disc degeneration, dehydration and bulging at numerous levels in August 2010.
Throughout this whole 18 months I have been completely drained of energy, intolerant to noise and light, had poor sleep patterns, tingling in fingers, poor concentration, irritability, nerve twitches in face, hot flushes and rashes, painful periods and sessions of clumsiness. I constantly ache but had put this down to trying to do too much, but this surely can't be all from my neck problems alone?
I'm taking amitriptyline 50 mg per night which is slightly helping with sleep, was taking 1200mg of gabapentin a day but was making me spaced out so stopped it. I'm having some steroid injections into my Occipital nerve this thursday to see if it will help calm the head pressure I feel - fingers crossed.
Friend of mine suggested FM so have been reading about it and it makes me wonder whether to get tested. The tender points specified on the charts hurt but don't know if I'm just getting the exact spot or maybe pressing harder than a consultant would.
Any suggestions as to whether I should go back to the GP for further checks?
Many thanks

 and :welcome: to the forum.

Reading what you've said about your various symptoms, some of them could be due to FM, but they could also be down to other conditions as there are several things with symptoms that overlap. Generally, when these have been ruled out, then a dx of FM is given.

Altho we suffer from FM, we're not qualified/able to give you a dx, that has to be done by a dr/specialist. The only suggestion I can really make is to print up some info about FM and go and see your gp again. Explain how you feel that your problems fit with those of FM, and that you're wondering if that is what could be wrong with you.

Have you had blood tests done, as you haven't mentioned them in your post. Only asking as this is where the tests usually start to see if you have FM. Blood tests and any other things your gp may feel is necessary are done, and depending on results, influences what could happen next to find out the problem.

Good luck with finding out what is causing your pain and symptoms :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed:

Hi
Thanks for the advice - I have had blood tests but way back when it all started in 2009, nothing recent. I thought nothing much can show up on a blood test though?? I've not even mentioned the lack of energy and aches to my GP as he's just concentrated on the neck issue. I've only focussed on that too, waiting for these injections etc. It's only recently I've started writing down how I feel each day. Maybe I should just show my GP my diary - that should make him test me!!
Thanks again - will let you know how I get on.

Definitely take your diary with you, not only can your gp look at it, having it to hand will also (hopefully) help you remember all that you need to tell him. There's no test for FM, but the blood tests do show possible indicators for other things that could be causing your pain and symptoms.

Let us know how you go on, and if you want to know anything, just ask and we'll try to help you with it :grouphug: :grouphug:

:welcome: to the forum bricheno

It's hard for us to say if you have fibro as there are so many symptoms and we all are all different.
I would push your gp for some answers, if your gp will not give you them ask them to refer you to see a rheumy at the hospital, they will be able to dx you. Sometimes it can be a long road getting answers as lots of docs like to rule out other things first, fibro does not show up in any tests so it will be last in the list when everything else comes back negative. :goodluck1: hope you get some answers soon. :hugs:

Thanks for your lovely welcome :D

Will get these injections over with this thurs then see about getting back to my GP. The consultant doing my injections didn't exactly inspire me with confidence when he said that most patients faint when they inject this area! Gulp! I'm SO nervous.

Reading the messages on this forum is reassuring and my heart goes out to you all with your symptoms. This may sound odd but I feel like I've come home, I can identify with so many of you! I'm not saying I definitely have FM but I'm certainly going to push for more investigations. You've all inspired me!

Sending you all thanks and gentle hugs :grouphug:

Morning all

Well, today is injection day and I'm extremely nervous!

Spoke to my physio yesterday and he said it wouldn't surprise him if I had FM, he said he was no rheumatologist but he tested my tender points and BOY they hurt!!

I'm just full of admiration for how you all keep going, I've been feeling this way a relatively short time in comparison and I really take my hat off to you. Even if this isn't FM and I've just got general aches from overdoing it I'm full of admiration for you living with it day in and day out.

Anyway, fingers crossed for today - everything crossed - even my eyes! ha!

Well, injections over thankfully - not a pleasant experience! :(

Don't feel any different though - the headaches are still as strong. Doc said it might just be bruising and settle down but I admit I'm a bit disappointed - was really positive these were going to help so feeling a bit let down.

Got some discharge info to take to my GP so gonna bring up the subject of FM and see what he says. Did any of you have problems in getting diagnosed? I know I'll have to go through more tests to rule out everything else but we'll see what happens. Did an online test for the new testing criteria and I scored pretty high but like you've all said, it could be something else with similar symptoms.

Hey ho - back on the merry go round!

Hi All

Just an update as you've all been really encouraging and supportive - went back to my GP and brought up the subject of FM.

He was extremely sympathetic and said he thought it was a possibility after living with long term pain, he has prescribed me pregabalin instead of the gabapentin. Having some blood tests in the morning to rule out whatever they rule out (!) and then he wants to see me again in 3 weeks to see if the meds are helping - in the meantime if the bloods come back ok then he will refer me to a Rheumatologist.

It was so easy to talk to him and for him not to dismiss my symptoms. It must be really frustrating to those who have unsympathic GP's.

The injections didn't take much effect - and now I have the initial side effects of new meds all over again and feel like crap. :(

It's all such a long slog isn't it.... passed from one place to another.
