Can anyone help me?

Postby jenb » Fri Apr 22, 2011 11:15 am

Hi,
I haven't been diagnosed with fibromyalgia but I just wondered if you could take a look at my symptoms and see what you think. Thanks.
It started with my back, degenerative disks and constant pain around 7 years ago. I have had treatment for my back but nothings worked. I still work full time as sittings ok it's just standing for too long that gives me a problem. So I've learned to live with my pain, and manage my back.
Then lately...
Pain on left side of torso
Constant stomach pain/feeling sick/bad period pain
Recurring leg pain/constant cramps lasting for over a day/Stiff knees/ankles/weakness in right arm/neck pain/Back – more constant spasm like pain leading to mobility problems/naggin pain across my foot where my toes join.
Very sensitive body/hurt by touch/itchy/numbness and tingling in left hand/skin very dry and wrinkly
Weight increase of 2 and a half stone
Increased headaches
Choking on nothing
Dry eyes/swollen
Anxiety/irrational fears/hearing voices/mood swings/palpitations/breathless on very little activity/dizziness/disturbed sleep/cleaning obsession/short attention span/bit of memory loss
Painful bump on finger
As you can see I didn't want to walk into the doctors surgery with so many symtoms, as I believe you are only alowed one illness per visit!
I've already seen her last year about the anxiety, when I lost my best friend and my dad was diagnosed with cancer in the same week.
I feel like I'm falling apart and I'm scared about that.
Hope someone can let me know if this sounds like fibromyalgia.
Thanks.

First of all  and :welcome:

Reading thru your list of symptoms/problems, some of them could be attributed to FM. However, FM is not a straightforward condition to dx and none of us on here an say if that is what is responsible for your symptoms or not. For that you do need to see your GP initially to start things off to fond out.

There are several other conditions with similar symptoms to FM, which is why you need to see a doc. The usual route to a dx is blood tests and any other tests your GP may feel necessary to see if there is anything causing your various symptoms and problems. Depending on test results you may either be referred to a specialist or your GP may feel confident to make a dx themselves. A dx of FM is usually only given when all other possibilities have been ruled out.

If your surgery only works on the basis of one thing per appt, then you need to start with the most prominent symptom and go from there. Maybe making a double appt could give you an opportunity to discuss more than one thing at a time.

hi thats exactly how mine develpoed from the low back onwards and in the very order things happened . it does sound like fibro but only the gp can take it further and test you for all other possibilitys as i have had done , there is a lot of evidence fibro delelopes after contiant pain fom disc problems as well as traumers of other types.

tell the gp about all you feel in one go and them he may have a idea what to look for

Hi,
Thank you all so much for the welcomes and the replies.
I guess I just wanted a bit more of an idea what's going wrong, there seems to be so much I thought the doctor might just write me off as a hypochondriac!
I did have tests for the anxiety to check if it was my heart etc, and all were clear. It's just since reading up about fibromyalgia online that I thought it sounded so similar, especially that so many things seem to happen at once.
I'm going to book and appointment with the doctor next week, and I think I may just take a list and hand it over to her!
Is there a test that shows up fibromyalgia?
Thanks!

There isn't blood test or anything to show you have FM. This linky to the NHS Choices pages about FM tells you how it is dx'd

As well as other info about it, treatment etc.
This other linky shows an illustration of the tender points that are mentioned when dxing FM

Hi and :welcome: to the forum as Shaz says keep pushing your docs we arent qualified to say whether or not your symptoms are those of FM as the cross over to other conditions is so high as Flup says :goodluck2: with getting a proper dx :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:
