why oh why is it considered we with fibro have a low pain threshold - or do i just misunderstand the term. to me low pain threshold means only being able to tolerate a small amount of pain - which is bull doody!! i have shown on numerous occasions that my ability to tolerate pain is stupidly high, and personally anyone with fibro who cant tolerate the pain is in real trouble - we all learn to live with it. the only reason i can think of for saying we have a low pain threshold is meaning we have a low cause of pain threshold in that absolutely anything can cause pain - this does not however mean we are making fuss over little pains that everyone else has but doesnt notice.

not sure if that all made sense, all i can say is one day someone will say low pain threshold to me and i will promptly test their pain threshold to the max.

I understood it as that I can't take as much pain as a 'normal' person but I could be wrong. From my experiences this is the absolute opposite of people with fibro. I have a friend with M.E who suffers from terrible pains (not quite the same but similar) and she is always going to a+e for some accident or other and she really doesn't feel the pain its amazing.
I recently walked around for a few days with a piece of glass in my foot and didn't really register it. By the time by boyfriend got it out it had healed over and had to literally dig ito out. I just sat and read a magazine while others cringed about it. So it did really pee me off when he said that, I believe that was the rheumy that said it which made it even more aggravating at the time.

I do however love your idea of testing the next person to say it threshold!

Low pain threshold means (I think) that you feel pain from a small stimulus. This could be taken to mean the same as hyperalgesia, rather than meaning you're a bit wimpy about pain. Hyperalgesia, or hypersensitivity to pain, is a core symptom of Fibro (it's what the tender point test is supposed to check for) and this means we feel more pain than we should from any pain stimuli.

BUT....this has nothing to do with tolerance. Most people with Fibro build up an amazing tolerance to pain (other wise we'd be curled up in balls whimpering and screaming an awful lot!). So although we're feeling more pain physically, we can tough it out better.

Did that make sense? :? It's a bit early!

A GP I used to go to said

"you just need to lose weight and do some exercise, then you'll get better"

I could have punched him, just what I needed to hear when it was agony just to put one foot in front of the other. Oh that it was so easy

Do they train for seven years to come out with comments like that!!!!

My boss telling me that he had a really sore knee too! In my opinion the unspoken words were 'and I am not off my work even though I am in pain'
If only I JUST had a sore knee! Aaaarrrggg! Wanted to give him a sore face! :D

(I have to admit my reply to the person wasn't very polite)

1. When I was younger: Its just growing pains, I should be 8ft by now.
2. General pain + headaches: from personal (non academic) tutor at university " If you can't stand the pace, quit. I eventually got a BSc and an MSc.
3. Back Pain: you are overweight, I was 11 stone and 5ft 8in, turned out to be a prolaped disk.
4. FM type stuff: "I don't know what this can be ?"
5. Chest pain: Its just muscle spasm.
6. OA: Arthritis wear and tear, everyone gets OA eventually.
7. Trapped nerve: prolapsed disks in neck.
I don't like pain because it hurts.

I wish I was tough as my cat, she removed her own stiches and never complains of hurts or pains.

When I first started getting neck/shoulder pains about 15 years ago (way before I'd heard of FM) I was told by a doctor that all I need to do is "hang loose". He said it was caused by how I held my shoulders. :?

Around the same time, another doctor (who most people refuse to see as he's that bad), told me he didn't think I had appendicitis but he didn't know what was causing the pain in my bowel. He said it'll go away on its own in time. I'm still waiting for it to go. Seriously, I've heard of more than one person coming out while telling him he should be struck off!
