Kundalini Yoga

Postby jojojo » Thu Oct 29, 2009 8:46 am

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to talk about something that has really helped me and my Fibromyalgia that may sound a little odd. Also I don't want to seem like I'm pushing this as I've already mentioned it in other posts. The only reason why I'm posting this is that if someone else does this and it helps them like it's helped me then that would be great.

In my search to find something to help me I have tried reiki, acupuncture, reflexology, tens machine, acupuncture pen, thera cane, massage cushion, hypnosis tapes for stress. I have been through therapy, cbt, and attended an anxiety group. I didn't get much from any of this. I read books on Buddhism and looked into meditation.

About a year ago I went through a phase of buying workout dvd's for when I was better (which are obviously still gathering dust). After realising I could be waiting a long time I started buying Dvd's that I could do now. I chose pilates, tai chi, that sort of thing. Then I came across something called "Kundalini Yoga by Maya Fiennes to destress and detox". I did it once and then it went on the shelf.

When I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia I started reading up on it and when I read about the stress element and adrenal glands etc it made me think of that dvd as Maya had mentioned adrenal glands, stress and kidneys.

I pulled it out and tried it again (It's very gentle and calming, no mad poses). There was a section to release stress and it did work, I ended up crying, it felt like a release.

I kept going back to it as it was so calming. It really has helped me. I feel more grounded. I can be in a complete state of stress (due to the pain etc) and then I do this and mellow out. It hasn't had a massive impact on my pain although it has changed it a bit. What it does is change my ability to cope with the pain.

I recommended it to a fellow fibro sufferer who is now also addicted to it. What I also like about it is that I can do it at home. I close the curtains, put on the fire, get a glass of water and light an incense stick and it's my time. It's a time where my focus isn't on my fibromyalgia, my pain.

If anyone is interested you can buy this dvd on Amazon for £10 and I believe it's well worth a try. If anyone does decide to give it a go (it takes about 7 times to feel a difference) could you post your opinions of it on here. If it really helps then it would be good for others to know about.

I don't want to push this on anyone but at the same time £10 is a lot cheaper than a lot of the other stuff out there - it's cheaper than going to yoga classes, having a massage etc.

I would be very interested to hear if this helps anyone else.

Cool,

I hope it helps you like it helped me - I'm the same I'm willing to give anything a go. It really started to help me after about the 7th time I did it.

Will you post back with your opinions/experience of it?

Hi

I've not been on here much lately. Seem to be having a bad time since having swine flu at end of sept.

I saw your other post about this yoga and ordered it from amazon. It cost £7.98 and came with a free music cd. It came today and hoping to try over weekend.

The reason ibought it was because I found meditation relaxing when I tried it at pain clinic.

I will post what I think of this DVD when i've used it a couple of times. I do pilates and love that.

Hello everybody

. I have tried this DVD three times since I got it. For me I found sitting crosslegged very painful as I have problems with my left knee. I also found that the repetitions of the exercises were to much.

I have started to try it sitting on a chair and only doing a few repetitions. I do think it is fairly good because you can adapt it to your own needs. I will use it once a week but for me I prefer my Pilates

. Take care everybody

Hi There,

I totally understand what you're saying. I found it quite uncomfortable to sit cross legged at first but after a couple of weeks I got used to it. I also modify it to suit my needs and stop if I need to. There are some stretches that I only half do. At first I only did it once a week but started to feel good when I did it so I did it a bit more and now I do it every day.

Apparantely Kundalini yoga is specific to the endocrine system and helps balance hormones which I've also read is a problem with fibromyalgia which may be why I feel it helps me. I'm not a specialist though so don't quote me!

Sorry to hear it's not for everyone, I was just hoping it might help someone like it has helped me.

Take care peeps

Hi,

Have just ordered your CD, I suffer from anxiety and depression as well as fibro. My friend mentioned this type of yoga and suggested I try it for the meditation side of it to help my anxiety. When I saw your post and read the reviews on the site, I decided what the hell, Its under £8.00 at the moment and I wanted a mediation and relaxation cd anyway, which comes free with it.

Hi there,

I too suffered from anxiety and depression for years. I have tried everything - antidepressants, cbt, anti-anxiety group and tablets. I've had acupuncture, reiki, all sorts to try and help my stress and anxiety. This DVD has been the best thing for me but it takes a while to really see the benefits. I started feeling a slight difference after about 7 times but after 3 months of doing it every day I really started to feel a lot better anxiety wise.

Good luck with it, hope you stick with it, that's the most important thing with it - if you do it daily it really does keep stress at bay.

Great, I'll get the DVD! I've used her book for about a year now. The exercises haven't made the condition go away but make me feel balanced, energized, alive (even with hangover from medication!) and I find them easier to do than normal yoga when I'm feeling weak and tired.
