Swollen ankles and feet

Postby ravelling » Tue Aug 15, 2006 3:20 pm

Hi - new to this forum, diagnosed last year after wondering what was wrong with me for 10+ years.

Anybody got any ideas?
I've been getting very swollen feet and ankles for about three or four weeks now and have been putting it down to the weather. However, it's cooler now (cold in fact) and I'm still getting the swelling and aching. I have the feeling I used to get the morning after very strenuous exercise - lower calves feel tight (no heat or acute pain), ankles and feet are swollen. Swelling will go down if I elevate my feet, but it comes back everytime I'm upright.
I'm having pain and stiffness more than usual in other places too, but the swelling is new.
I'm always caught by surprise when this blooming syndrome throws up a new symptom, but this one is getting me down - I've now got 'old lady' feet and it's not nice :?

Is this something that others have experienced? It's not really mentioned in the books I have.

Hi Ravelling

Welcome aboard, I'm quite new too but it's great to find other people who understand our condition.

I get swollen lower legs, feet, hands and fingers. Weather doesn't seem to make any difference either. When I wake up in the morning my hands are clawed together and my nails digging into my palms. My toes feel like sausages too! My hands and feet are so stiff I can barely move. Not a pretty sight!

Hi Ravelling,

Welcome to the site!

I do get swollen ankles mainly on the left one. Also the meds I am on cause fluid retention which has made matters worse.

If yours have only just started to swell it's probably best that you get it checked out by your GP, just to be on the safe side.

Gentle Hugs

Hello Ravelling,

As this is something new for you, its important to get it checked out with youre GP. We are all guilty of assuming everything is caused by FMS, and not bothering our docs with it. Many of us have stories where weve neglected to tell them things and then have had "minor" things quickly turn into "major" things at the ER !

I do get swelling in my left foot, which spreads up my leg with numbness, but it usually starts with horrendous pain in my big toe for a few hours. Ive never managed to get an answer from any of my Doctors about it....just another quirky FMS thing, but get yours checked out anyway.

Also, Im finding the change in weather a bit hard to cope with, everythings cranking up a few notches....Ive got my central heating on, and am wearing my big fluffy dressing gown, and its still August !

Good luck, hope you feel a bit better soon, and let us know how you get on. xx

Thanks for all the support. It's nice to find a place where people understand.

Saw my Dr yesterday (she had a cancellation - how often does that happen?) and showed her my feet. She's keen to investigate the swelling before we decide it's just a new twist to my FMS and I resign myself to getting my shoes from specialists and wearing my flight socks all the time.
Chest is clear, no obvious heart problems, had bloods done for U&Es and LFTs Taking urine in for protein testing today.

We talked about my pain and stiffness. Paracetamol isn't doing anything, can't take Ibuprofen because of stomache issues, codeine doesn't like me (feel p***ed all the time) so we're going to try Amitryptilline 10mgs at night. Bit woried about this as just managed to get clear of Prozac in June. I know this is a different issue, but I really hate taking pills.

Anyone got experience of Amitryptilline having an effect on their pain?

Hiya :D

Sometimes I get swelling in my ankles, but usually with pain, but it is always best to check with the doc.

I was amazed to see a comment made by Maldives about Amitryptiline. I have put on quite a bit of weight, nearly a stone and thought that maybe it was just because I was heading closer to 30 and the weight was starting to stick, especially after having 3 children. I've never had a problem before, usually maintaining my weight and just moving a couple of pounds up or down, however, I started taking Amitriptyline a few months ago and now wonder if this is the reason for the weight gain. Sorry if I'm waffling lol. I do find it helps me of a night, it stops the restless legs and helps me sleep, but as for pain, I take it with 2 tramadol and paracetamol tablets, so that helps too.

This forum is a fantastic place, it's great to talk to people especially when you are having a tough time, it's great to talk to people who do actually understand and don't just say they do! And like I have today you always learn something new and find out things that are comforting or at least explain a few things.

Thanks for listening, speak to you soon

Take care

Tracy :D xx

Hi all

Hope you don't mind me joining in about Amytrip. I have been on this for about the last 2 - 3 years taking 75mg to 150 mgs a day depending on how I feel. It also helped me to spleep which is what I was given it for as I have a TN sleeping is a real big problem for me. I have found that this helped quite a lot but in the last few months my pain has got worse again so my Rheumy is now going to try me on Pregabalin when I can get to the Docs :x I have put on about stone and half in weight since taking it which hasn't been pleasant, we have enough to put up with without adding extra weight but I needed the relief so no choice really :(

Anyway just another side of things with Amytrip speak again soon :)
Bye for now - holly

Hello Tracey & Holly

The GP who gave me Amtrip did so for pain & sleep, but it didn't help, I noticed I had an increased appetite and would eat constantly... when I went back for a check up I told him all I did was eat and had put weight on, apparently this is one of its side effects.

I suppose what works for one person doesn't for another, it would appear we are all different and its trail and error for all of us..

Bye Maldives

p.s. just hope the new tablets I'm on will work.... please!!!!!!

Hello everyone

Well, I'm quite worried about the posibility of putting weight on with these meds :( That's the last thing I need.

I've taken it for 3 nights now. I don't know how long you need to take it before you see any effects, but no difference so far.

Watch this space!
