Coping with boredom

Postby lizanne » Mon Jun 28, 2010 3:14 pm

Does anyone have problems with boredom when the mind is willing but the body is not able?

I struggle with boredom and frustration when I'm having a lot of pain and fatigue, it severely limits what you can do. :(

Hi Lizanne I know exactly how you feel and Budda too you get so fed up because you cant do anything, your not in the mood for the drivel on the TV, others have said they listen to music which lifts them up. I want to start making some cards but my tremor and pain mean its difficult to try at the moment. Do you read, I know that even concentrating is difficult or maybe painting :dunno: :dunno: Hope you feel better soon both of you :hugs: :hugs: :hugs:

Sorry Lizanne just remembered you are the lady who paints, listens to music and plays the guitar duh my post is no help to you at all  maybe meditation during the really bad times would help you get your mind off the pain :dunno:

Meditation is a good idea, as is coming on these forums for a browse and support :D

Although I paint and play bass guitar, I can only do these thing when I'm feeling better, which is less often than I would like. I would love someday to be able to work, so that I could feel like I have a bit of purpose but I'm not sure if that will happen.

I also get low, but I can't tell if it's Fibro or Bipolar (I've had bipolar for 6 years, probably longer...). The hardest thing to remember when in a flare and feeling down is that it will pass, things will improve.....easier said than done sometimes

I have been listening to audio books as i am forced to have 3 x 40 min rests a day with my eyes shut by my specialist (these do not help but im persevering).

I am going mad as I have had to give up work and wa,s up until april 2009, a workaholic as well as a sports nut and now im tearing my hair out with lonliness and boredom. I am undergoing counselling to help with coing strategies.

what do you do with your day? are their any support groups near you?

Audiobooks sound good, I hope your rest breaks start to help soon :) You must be missing sport very much and work too, it's a big adjustment going from full throttle to a crawl. I used to horseride and do a lot of hillwalking and miss it terribly.

On a bad day I don't get up to very much, when I'm very bad I stay in bed or on the couch, this is when I struggle with boredom. If I'm well enough to sit up I'll faff around on the computer or watch TV. On a good day I'll go into town and get a coffee, potter in the garden or do some painting.

There is a support group in Glasgow, I e-mailed them last week and am waiting to hear back, it is a bit of a hike for me though.

It sounds like your very much at the stage I am, I thank the heavens for my mum who pushes me on and drags me out for a cuppa even if its not in town then at her house

I have recntly been given some stand up comedy cds to listen to so I am looking forward to listening to them :0)
Audio books are a great way to distract yourself if you cant concentrate on a book.

I do crosswords etc..., sometimes i fall asleep while doing them, when i wake up i am pleased to see a bit more of the day has passed, i also loved sport and walking, struggling to adapt to a sedate life.

Hi there,

Know exactly where you're coming from, I listen to audio books or radio 4 when I'm bored. For some reason my brain can handle the voices on radio 4, they seem to have presenters with smooth voices and the programes aren't too long. Also, in the afternoons, when I am seriously tired and brain-fogged, they have an afternoon play that I can usually drift off or simply relax to.

Love to everyone...I believe that only the strong get fibro because only the strong can cope :D

when i'm not feeing too bad i knit or crochet but on bad days when hands are to bad for this my oh has gotta me an online book reader thing - like the e-readers but on the pc which he makes very large for me so i can read it wholst lying in bed and the only thing i need to do is scroll the mouse or press the arrow keys makes it so much easier then struggling to hold a book when hands are sore and shaky and he also got me a padded laptop table with a light and drink holder on for next to me on the bed so that all i need is at hand - on very bad days i tend to spill the drink but thankfully the travel cups spill less then normal ones :P

Hi

where do you get your audiobooks from? I've been looking online and unless you subscribe to monthly sites they seem expensive to buy.

I wouldn't mind trying one fir fiction books. I like to read but just haven't got the concentration anymore plus my eyes always seem strained.

I have bought meditation cd's and do listen to these to relax.

I get my audio books from ebay, amazon and my oh downloads them for me. The library and local charity shops are also good places to get them. Just keep your eyes peeled (horrid saying that).
