Cervical spine disc replacement and Fibro

Postby countyfan » Sun Aug 26, 2012 3:37 pm

Wondered if anyone else on here has been in my situation and can give me some advice.
I have suffered from a herniated disc at C5/6 for about a year. Have tried to delay the need for it to be operated on by trying physio and nerve block injections. Now, however, as well as the pain I get have been suffering from arm and leg numbness and the spinal surgeon says there is notheing else for it-I have to have the disc removed.
My problem is that they seem reluctant to proceed quickly, because of my diagnosis of Fibro. I went onto a cervical spinal forum and the posters on there said thet Fibro does cause problems with the disc removal/replacement procdure. I just wondered if anyone else has come across these same problems and if so how did you proceed? I really am not going to be able to work for much longer if I don't have the op, as I can hardly pick up anything without dropping it-due to my lack of feeling in the hands. Also I am worried that my legs are starting to go the same way and it may result in permanent damage if I don't stop this herniated disc from pressing onto my spinal cord soon!

Thanks in anticipation,

Hi
Have you spoke to the surgeon/specialist about your worries after surgery?

I dont have any disc problems but have had 3 operations since having fibro, i always make sure i let everyone know that i have fibro even the nurses on the ward and i do believe having that extra care after surgery makes a big difference.

As long as you rest after which i dont think you will have much choice in if you are having back surgery you should recovery fine. :hugs:

Thanks Shazq
I am sure it is possible to do the surgery, as Doc wouldn't have discussed it with me otherwise. Its just that they don't seem to be pushing it along very quickly and my symptoms are getting worse. I am seeing the surgeon on 13th Sept so will try and pin him down as to waiting times then. The ufortunate thing is that the Rheumy for Fibro isn't at the same hospital as the spinal surgeon and even though they are only 15miles apart there is no communication as they're in different trusts! I had an MRI in March that shows the herniated disc has got worse so they will have to do something soon../

:fingerscrossed: You are not waiting to long. Make sure you are topped up with pain killers after the op, they will probably have you on morphine after the op which will help you cope with the pain.

Also make sure you have all your pain meds ordered from your normal prescription for your return home from hospital.

I am due to have another op next month, not looking forward to it but it needs to be done.

Hope you hear something soon. :hugs:

Cervical spine disc replacement and Fibro

Postby Mozza » Mon Aug 27, 2012 9:03 am

Hi, I have 2 disintegrating vertebrae with bulging discs and I'm the opposite. I have the consultant tomorrow and am terrified he won't put me forward for the op. my whole right side is affected by them and have waited since 3rd June to have my mri call back. I would go in tomorrow if I could as I feel more disabled every day. I have burn scars on my arm from dropping a pan with hot oil but they don't seem too keen to go ahead with it in Scotland. Fingers crossed he listens tomorrow :-( m

Mozza,
I know exactly how you feel. I work as a Biomedical Scientist and have had a couple of incidents recently where the numbness of my hands has caused an accident, one involving a sharps injury from a contaminated blade that meant I had to e checked for Hepatitis! It's the fact that the numbness seems to be spreading to my legs that really made me decide to agree to be put forward for the op. I don't know how long I will have to wait but my boss is starting to complain about my competence to do the job again now :( Trouble is there is a whole other question of do they use a piece of your own bone and fuse the discs or do I ask about artificial one?
Anyway, let me know how you get on with your appointment and I'll try and keep in touch re mine.

Hugs (((xx)))

 hi all buggered disc(ettes)

I was about to post a new topic along the same lines. Had my bulging disc in my neck for over 2yrs now. Different pain sensations MADE me mention it to my gp. Because I (and my gp) don't like the idea of having surgery around my neck, i'm gonna try to keep me out of the way of a surgeon. Yes, i'm a jessie and a woose, 1st one to admit it. But knowing my luck other dics either above/below are playing silly buggers too.

I know that its up to the individual how long they can go on for. Also if a surgeon says that 'you'd' have to wait a bit longer as they don't think that the damage that could be caused is minimal, for now. as not my best time for typing and thinking, totally lost what i wanted to say  Just wondered if other members had, had cervical surgery and how do it go etc

Hope all is fairly well in your worlds
Had symptoms for 5yrs. Dx February 2011

Sorry to hear of the problems you seem to be finding with treatment, I have fibro, diabetes and I also had spinal disc problems c6/7.
I started losing the use of my right arm and lost the fine motor skills used in the hands. My gp made an appointment with Clare Morgan a consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon in Owestry, Shropshire.
She gave me a list of options and I decided on a cervical prosthetic disc replacement. 2 months later it was done.
Its done lying done on your back and she entered from the front (under all of my double chins).
That was in Nov 2010, with no side effects or horrible nasty stories.
Thank you NHS. x :-)

I've reduced the size of the piccie you added eggle to make it a bit easier to see. On smaller screens it needs to be moved about quite a bit and you don't get to see just how amazing it is with what it shows :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing: :bear-dancing:

Thanks,

Within two days i was up and about & was discharged on the 3rd day.
I returned to work full time within 11 weeks.
Its amazes me that shopping in Tecos can cause my fibro to flare up & knock me off my feet, yet the opp had no effect!
