Legs Giving Way At Knees (Ataxia)

Postby Jasonw » Wed Nov 28, 2012 1:19 pm

Hi I'm Jas (Male 43)
This is an out line of my 'history' before/leading up to being diagnosed with Complex Fibromyalgia (if you wish to miss out this section please do but it's my question I really care about)

I was a very fit & keen cyclist, I loved it, out in the fresh air & I felt great from really pushing myself & burning any of the days stress away. In 1999 whilst stationary in my car, I got hit hard from behind (by a doctor of all people) anyway the whiplash really kicked in the following day & I suffered intermittent neck pain over the following few years + a spell of a 2-3 months walking difficulties (it went away without a real cause found) In 2005 as a direct result of that accident (surgeons words) I needed Cervical Spinal Disc (C6-C7) removed. Job done, carried on with some 'more cautious' cycling until in 2007 the next disc up went, I now have in my neck vertebrae C5-C6 & C6-C7 fused with an internal cage fitted. Pain did not subside & some weakness in arm stayed. Pain specialist burnt some spinal nerves due to 'apparent' osteoarthritis. 4 days later I collapsed as though one leg missing, what followed was 2-3 years from hell, seeking answers for repeated falls due to legs giving way & or balance, severe daily fatigue & eventually seudo seizures lasting hours at a time & speech stammer.
I now have great care at Frenchay Hospital Bristol where 2010 (ish) diagnosed with fibromyalgia but complexed by post surgical neuropathic pain, spinal ops etc. I spent 2 months in hospital last year & have just had another 1 month stay this year. I can no longer walk without a stick & often need two for a max walk duration of 10mins on a 'good' day. On a positive note the 'seizures' are in remission & I am at last receiving some CBT therapy for the way it has effected me mentally.

What I still struggle with however is why do my legs just give way, 'I can drop like a stone' always worse as fatigue gets worse & comes on immediately with intense pain.

Does anyone else get either legs giving way at the knees (or even ankles)?
Has anyone had any explanation as to why this may happen?

Any info would be really appreciated! Thanks for reading.
Take care,

Jas

Hi Jas and :welcome:

I can only go on my experiences and yes my leg and knee gives way with no warning.

Mine tho is to do with the siatica nerve (or so im told) I have degenarative disc disease and protruding discs, add that to the severe stiffness of the fibro it all effects the nerve that runs down my leg.

As a long shot, have you been tested for M.S?

Hi Jas

My knees click a lot and sometimes lock. I have had a few falls from my knees & ankles giving way, i just drop to the floor.

I have to use a walking stick now for balance & support, it has saved me from a few falls outside.

I am not sure what is the cause of mine, i was seen by a Rheumy 4 yrs ago as my doc thought it could be arthritis but he said it was not.

I do have osteopenia so that might be connected? i have to have a daxa scan done every 2 yrs.

I have crohns which affect the joints & fibro affect the joints that is what my gp says to me.

 jason

I have two types of falls. The legs giving way for no reason at all are the better of the two, cos its just a crumple from the knees down. The worst one is a full on timber, especially sideways. I've got dodgy disc in my lower back just above my coxyyc (excuse the spelling) so they put it down to that. I have isolated numbness in patches on my legs and they also go completely numb. Have been tested for MS so i'm at least spared that .

You have definitely come to the right place. The members and moderators are totally fab and supportive and will anything to help you. Either a listening ear or just to 'hear' your rant on-line

Hope we chat again. I also hope that your pain is at least manageable
Had symptoms for 5yrs. Dx February 2011

I haven't fallen (yet) but I often feel weakness and like my legs, neck or spine will collapse. I had a back injury a few years ago in 2007 as well tho.
